Samantha Bond was born into a home where theater was the only possible language. The daughter of Philip Bond and Pat Sandys, her destiny seemed sealed before she set foot in an acting school. She didn't need a flashy stage name because her own already carried an undeniable British heritage.
But the general public inevitably associates her with one very specific office in London.
In 1995, she accepted the role of Miss Moneypenny in GoldenEye. It was the first time the character stopped being a simple comic relief and stood up to a James Bond played by Pierce Brosnan. She worked on four installments of the franchise, through Die Another Day in 2002.
And he more than delivered.
Her connection to the franchise ended when Brosnan left the role of agent 007. Bond stated in several interviews that there was no point in continuing if her co-star was no longer there. So her exit from the world of espionage was as clean as her entrance.
Her training at the Royal Shakespeare Company helped her avoid being typecast after leaving the secret service. In 1999, she received a Tony Award nomination for her work in the play Amy’s View, where she shared the stage with Judi Dench. That Broadway experience confirmed that her natural habitat remained text-based theater.
Not all the reviews were unanimous.
British television gave her a second professional life with long-running characters. Between 2010 and 2015, she played Lady Rosamund Painswick in Downton Abbey. Her character served as a necessary counterpoint to the rigidity of the Crawley household, bringing a much more liberal, urban perspective from her residence in London.
In 2007, she joined the cast of the comedy Outnumbered as Aunt Angela. It was an odd change of pace for those who only knew her for her earlier elegance. In this series, Bond explored a theatrical and somewhat irritating side that worked for several seasons until 2016.
And then came the mystery.
In 2022, she returned to her aristocratic role in the film Downton Abbey: A New Era. The production had a budget of $40 million and served to wrap up storylines the original series had left hanging. Bond has always said that returning to that wardrobe is like visiting an old family you only see at Christmas.
In 2023, she appeared in the drama The Inheritance. The plot revolved around secrets that surface after an unexpected death and the struggle over a family estate. Critics noted that her presence brought the gravitas needed for a script that at times became overly convoluted.
In 2024, she starred in the television adaptation of The Marlow Murder Club. She plays Judith Potts, a woman who lives alone in a mansion in Marlow and spends her time creating crosswords until she witnesses a murder. Filming for the series took place during the summer of 2023 on real locations along the Thames.
Bond lives in London with her husband, actor Alexander Hanson, whom she married in 1989. They have two children who also work as actors. The contract for the second season of The Marlow Murder Club was signed in May 2024, with a confidentiality clause covering the fees received.
