In 1991, British critics noticed a woman who seemed to hide a secret behind every line. That year, Saskia Reeves starred in Close My Eyes alongside Clive Owen and Alan Rickman. The incest drama could have derailed her career, but it ended up proving that her apparent coldness was a tool of absolute precision.
Saskia Reeves never went for the easy applause.
She was born in London in 1961 and grew up in a home where acting was no stranger. Her father was an English actor and her mother a Dutch woman. That mix of cultures gave her a restraint distinct from that of her classmates at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Before moving into film, she spent years honing her craft in theater with the Cheek by Jowl company and learned that silence communicates more than a scream.
In 1995, she took on the role of Miriam in Butterfly Kiss. It was a bold move by Michael Winterbottom, in which she played the submissive companion of a serial killer. The film barely grossed 18,000 dollars on its US release, but it became a cult favorite among European independent film analysts.
The industry never quite knew where to place her.
But she found her place in quality television. In the year 2000, she took on the challenge of playing Lady Jessica in the miniseries Dune. It was an ambitious production adapting Frank Herbert's novel, and Reeves brought an aristocratic dignity that balanced the work's visual excesses. That shoot in Prague lasted several months and gave her a sense of how large international productions run.
Then came her peak as an actress. Unlike many actresses who fade out after turning fifty, Reeves started landing prestigious projects at the BBC and other platforms. In 2010 she appeared in the series Luther, and in 2015 she joined the cast of Wolf Hall. Her ability to play women with a complex inner life made her indispensable to casting directors in London.
The general public took a while to put a name to her, but they always recognized her face.
In 2022, her career found a new fundamental pillar in the series Slow Horses. She plays Catherine Standish, a secretary with a past marked by alcoholism who works in an office of disgraced spies. It's a role that demands extreme restraint, because Standish is the moral center of a group of cynical, careless characters.
For this role, Reeves chose not to read all of Mick Herron's novels at once. She preferred to discover her character's evolution script by script to keep the set feeling fresh. The show's success has guaranteed her a place on screen for several consecutive seasons.
In 2024, filming of the show's fourth season took up much of her work schedule at studios in London. The production used Sony Venice 2 cameras to achieve the grainy texture so characteristic of British suburbs. Reeves shot her interior scenes in a real office block in the Smithfield Market area.
