The Avant-Garde Theater Heritage

Julie Delpy was fourteen when Jean-Luc Godard cast her in Détective in 1985. It was not a gentle discovery. The director was looking for a specific gaze and found it in this teenager, who already carried the intellectual weight of her parents, Albert Delpy and Marie Pillet.

She grew up backstage and on experimental film sets in 1970s Paris. But that training didn't keep her from feeling like an outsider in the French film industry of the time. That's why she decided to move to New York in 1990 to study directing at NYU.

The French film industry never quite knew what to do with her.

She sought full control over her storytelling long before the idea of the auteur was fashionable for actresses of her generation. In 1991, she shot Homo Faber, and soon after came her meeting with Richard Linklater. That moment permanently changed the course of her career.

Her Voluntary Exile to Texas

In 1995, Before Sunrise hit theaters. What seemed like a small romantic film became a narrative experiment about the passage of time and maturity. Delpy didn't just act. She and Ethan Hawke rewrote much of the script without credit on that first installment.

And the gamble paid off.

By the time the sequel Before Sunset arrived in 2004, her name was already officially listed in the writing credits. She earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, validating her ability to dissect neurosis and desire with a surgical precision that unsettled traditional producers.

But success in Hollywood didn't tame her. She kept alternating commercial projects such as An American Werewolf in Paris in 1997 with much drier art-house works. She always kept a cautious distance from the California studio system.

The Tyranny of Creative Control

Her move into feature directing came in 2002 with Looking for Jimmy, though it was 2 Days in Paris in 2007 that revealed her true tone. It's a sharp, jittery comedy with a frantic edit that she supervised herself. At this stage she took on roles as director, screenwriter, editor and even composer of the film score.

In 2009, she directed The Countess, a historical drama about Erzsébet Báthory. The shoot was complex and showed her interest in dark female characters who refuse to play it safe. Financing her films has always been a battle against gender bias in production offices.

She never accepted the role of the passive muse.

Over the following decade, she kept a steady pace. In 2013, she closed out Linklater's trilogy with Before Midnight, exploring the decay of love with unusual rawness. In 2015, she directed Lolo, a romantic comedy that performed well at the French box office but that she considered a pure genre exercise.

In 2019, she premiered My Zoe, a drama about loss and scientific ethics that she wrote after years of financial rejections. For 2021, she took on the creation and directing of the series On the Verge, centered on the lives of four women in Los Angeles. The project was canceled after its first season of twelve episodes by decision of the distribution platform.

In 2024, she shot A Dazzling Display of Splendor, a satire set in the world of silent film. The final production budget came to around five million euros.
