Sophie Turner's life changed with a school casting call in Northampton. She was thirteen when she landed the role of Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, and her formal education ended that very moment. She didn't attend university or traditional drama schools; the HBO set was her real academy for a decade.
She grew up surrounded by adults in the icy landscapes of Northern Ireland.
Her performance evolved alongside her character. She went from the naive young woman dreaming of princes to a political survivor with a icy stare. But that early success came at a high personal cost. The aesthetic pressure and public scrutiny on social media took a toll on her mental health during the show's years of greatest exposure.
And she survived all of it.
In 2016, she made her push into big Hollywood productions with X-Men: Apocalypse. The role of Jean Grey was the perfect chance to break into mainstream movies beyond the walls of Winterfell. But critics gave it a lukewarm reception, and the box office didn't perform as expected at Fox.
The sequel Dark Phoenix in 2019 was a hard blow to her action movie career. The film suffered constant delays and reshoots that ultimately drained audience interest. It was a resounding financial flop, grossing just $252 million against a budget of over $200 million.
That setback forced her to rethink her professional priorities.
She decided to step away from visual effects work in search of projects with more dramatic weight. In 2022, she starred in the miniseries The Staircase alongside Toni Collette and Colin Firth. There, she proved her range could adapt to true crime with a restraint many didn't expect from someone who had been surrounded by dragons and superpowers.
For a time, her private life in the United States took up more press space than her filming projects. But in 2023 she returned to her home country to shoot Joan, a drama series based on the life of a famous British jewel thief. Her move to London marked a turning point in her artistic maturity.
Turner has always worked better in episodic formats than on the big screen. In 2024, she joined the cast of Haven, a suspense series for Amazon Prime Video in which she plays a pension office worker who gets caught up in a high-stakes heist.
The project marked her first major collaboration with the streaming industry after the end of the HBO era.
The actress has know how to leverage her image for high-end fashion campaigns, but her real interest seems to lie in independent production. Her choices after turning twenty-five reflect a constant effort to break free from the shadow of Sansa Stark. She avoids damsel-in-distress roles and seeks characters with complex moral edges.
In 2025, her casting in the thriller Trust was announced, a production centered on power dynamics within a wealthy family. The shoot was scheduled to last four months on locations in the Swiss Alps.
