Lonnie Rashid Lynn wasn't looking for a seat with his name on it in the Los Angeles studios when he started rhyming in the nineties. Common was the stage name of a Chicago kid who understood rhythm as a political tool. But the film industry has a special knack for spotting presences that fill the screen without apparent effort.
His entry into acting was no whim of a music star. In 2006, he accepted a role in Smokin' Aces and proved that his restrained body language was good for more than shooting music videos. It was a risky move, since the leap from the mic to the script is often met with plenty of prejudice from specialized critics.
And the gamble paid off.
Shortly afterward, in 2007, he worked under Ridley Scott in American Gangster. He didn't need many lines of dialogue to hold his own opposite Denzel Washington. That performance got casting directors to stop seeing him as a rapper who acts and start treating him as an actor who also knew how to write rhymes.
In 2008, he appeared in Wanted alongside Angelina Jolie. Filming this action thriller was his first real encounter with big-budget digital effects productions, with budgets of 75 million dollars. That experience changed how he thought about waiting time on set.
His mainstream breakthrough came through a two-way street. In 2014, he co-wrote the song Glory with John Legend for the film Selma, where he also played activist James Bevel. Winning the Oscar in 2015 gave him a different standing in the offices of major studios in California.
But he didn't stop at historical dramas. In 2017, he joined the John Wick franchise to go head-to-head with Keanu Reeves. The fight choreography in that sequel demanded months of intense physical training. For Common, on-screen credibility depends on how much real sweat goes into the preparation.
He knows how to pick his battles.
His television work has also been steady. In 2011, he signed on for the series Hell on Wheels and spent four seasons playing a man freed from slavery who was looking for his place on the railroad. It was a 31-episode job that let him develop a character arc far more complex than a typical feature film role.
In 2022, he made his Broadway debut in the play Between Riverside and Crazy. That stage debut at the Hayes Theater confirmed that his voice has the power to carry without a microphone in front of a live audience.
In 2023, he joined the cast of the sci-fi series Silo for Apple TV+. He plays Robert Sims in a production that explores a dystopian future underground. The series was renewed for a second season of filming after its viewership exceeded the production company's initial expectations.
In 2024, he worked on the post-apocalyptic action film Breathe alongside Jennifer Hudson. Filming took place mainly in locations across Pennsylvania under the direction of Stefon Bristol. The production's final cost came to 15 million dollars.
