In 2004, Simon Cowell told her she was out of her league. Jennifer Hudson had just been eliminated from the third season of American Idol, and her future seemed limited to singing at local events in Chicago. But fate in Hollywood is a capricious screenwriter that prefers stories of survival.
Two years after that television rejection, the singer landed the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls. It was no discreet performance. Hudson devoured every scene opposite global stars like Beyoncé and Jamie Foxx.
In 2007, she took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. It was the culmination of a meteoric rise that broke the mold of the film industry at the time.
And the success was no mirage.
Hudson's personal life was shattered in 2008 after a violent incident that claimed the lives of several members of her family. The whole world watched her silence. But the actress decided that work was the only way to process the trauma, and she returned to the recording studio just a few months later.
Pain became discipline.
Her self-titled debut album sold more than one million copies worldwide. That work earned her a Grammy and confirmed that her voice had a distinct weight that went beyond the manufactured ballads of radio pop.
In 2015, she decided to try her luck on the New York stage with The Color Purple. Her Broadway run was no movie star whim. She won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album and proved that her vocal technique could withstand eight weekly performances without a hitch.
Aretha Franklin personally called Hudson to ask her to play her in the biopic. The project came to life in 2021 with the release of Respect. Critics praised her ability to embody the Queen of Soul without slipping into parody or a mere technical imitation.
In 2022, Hudson's career reached a milestone few artists ever touch. By winning a Tony as producer of the musical A Strange Loop, she completed the EGOT. The acronym refers to those who have an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony on their shelf.
Only seventeen people had achieved this before.
That same year, she launched her own talk show, titled The Jennifer Hudson Show. The show quickly gained traction on American television, drawing a loyal audience looking for stories of perseverance and live music.
In 2024, she returned to action roles in the science fiction film Breathe. The production had an estimated budget of seventy million dollars.
