The Yale Method Discipline

Angela Bassett didn't ask permission to enter the industry. In 1993, she spent weeks eating only broccoli and white fish to fit Tina Turner's body. The result in What's Love Got to Do with It was a physical performance so fierce it alarmed producers.

Audiences simply couldn't look away.

Before getting to that point, she studied at Yale, where she earned a master's in Fine Arts that gave her an almost military-level technical foundation. But 1980s New York offered few easy openings for a Black woman with her training. She worked as a receptionist at a beauty salon while looking for stage roles on the off-Broadway circuit.

In 1991, she played Reva Styles in Boyz n the Hood. It was a supporting role, but her screen presence forced casting directors to take her seriously. That led to her first meeting with Spike Lee to shoot Malcolm X in 1992.

The industry tried to pigeonhole her into roles as a long-suffering mother or a devoted wife. She answered with Strange Days in 1995. In that sci-fi thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow, she proved she could handle guns and lead action sequences without losing her elegance.

But the money didn't always keep up with the prestige.

The Business of Survival

During the first decade of the 2000s, big-budget films forgot about her. The offers she received were mediocre, so Bassett chose to turn to television. In 2013, she joined the cast of American Horror Story and discovered that the episodic format let her explore far more twisted characters than mainstream film did.

Her salary per episode of 9-1-1 reached $450,000 in 2021. That figure placed her among the highest-paid actresses in American television. It was a smart financial move that allowed her to choose her film projects very carefully.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2018, she played Queen Ramonda in Black Panther. The film's box office topped $1,300 million worldwide. Her character returned in 2022 in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, earning her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She lost the award to Jamie Lee Curtis. The camera caught her face of total disappointment during the ceremony, and the clip went viral within minutes. Still, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tried to make up for it in January 2024 by presenting her with an honorary Oscar for her entire career.

The actress runs the production company Bassett Vance Productions with her husband. In 2024, the company signed an exclusive deal with Paramount to develop original content. Her estimated net worth exceeds $25 million.
