An American flag burns on screen as the voice-over of Denzel Washington, playing Malcolm X, angrily condemns white men for their crimes against humanity and compares them to the devil. Directed by Spike Lee, the story is set in Omaha, Nebraska. One night, shortly before Malcolm Little is born, a group of Klan members surrounds the Little family's house, smashes every window and disappears into the darkness. That attack serves as the starting point of the story, which opens with fire and violence in the life of a child who has not yet entered the world.
The movie was saved thanks to financial help from African American figures such as Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Janet Jackson, Prince and Tracy Chapman, who made donations.
Malcolm X is the first American narrative film to be granted permission to shoot in Mecca, a city non-Muslims are not allowed to enter.
Spike Lee contributed $2 million of his $3 million salary, while the budget rose from 28 to nearly $33 million.
In Spain the movie sold 133,798 tickets, compared with 594,984 in France and 127,306 in Germany.
Denzel Washington lost the Best Actor Oscar to Al Pacino, for Scent of a Woman, a decision Spike Lee criticized.
Mandela closes the movie with a quote from Malcolm X, but he refused to say it out loud for fear that the apartheid government would use it against him.
Warner Bros. said the movie lost more than $30 million in 1992, partly due to budget problems and promotional costs.
The movie grossed $48.1 million and won four NAACP Image Awards, including those for Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
