Erin Gruwell is a recently graduated young teacher who starts working as an English teacher at a high school in Long Beach, California, whose students, who live in marginalized neighborhoods, are marked by gang violence. After a rough start, she discovers how to earn their respect and trust and how to help them change: she tells them about Anne Frank and other teenagers, less fortunate than they are, who lived through great tragedies and wrote about them.
