Hunter Parrish didn't ask permission to enter the living rooms of half the world. In 2005 he put on Silas Botwin's shirt and endured eight years of a series that broke the mold for cable television. He was seventeen when he started filming Weeds and finished at twenty-five.
This is an actor who grew up in front of the cameras. While other teen idols of his generation went for the easy box-office hit in romantic comedies, he preferred to try his luck in independent film. In 2009 he took part in It's Complicated under Nancy Meyers, sharing the screen with Meryl Streep.
Not everything was about growing fictional plants.
Parrish soon understood that television is a double-edged sword that can typecast you forever. So he used the summer breaks of his flagship series to move to New York and hit the stage. His square-jawed, blond Californian look was the perfect bait for casting directors looking for the boy next door.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2008, he made his Broadway debut as Melchior Gabor in the musical Spring Awakening. It was a risky move, since it helped him move away from the good-guy image he projected on the small screen. Manhattan critics are rarely kind to TV stars who try to sing, but they made an exception for him.
He repeated the feat in 2011, leading the cast of Godspell at the Circle in the Square Theatre. That production demanded exhausting physical energy, and Parrish proved he could carry a show on his shoulders without any special effects. But the film industry kept knocking on his door with roles that exploited his gentler side.
Theater gave him the respect that television denied him.
In 2012 he closed out his run on Weeds with a finale that left his character in a limbo of forced maturity. That was when he decided he did not want to be the lead in every story. He began choosing projects where the dramatic weight rested not solely on his face but on the quality of the script.
In 2014, he played Tom Howland in the movie Still Alice opposite Julianne Moore. That shoot required him to rein in his performance in a drama about Alzheimer's that won the Oscar for Best Actress. Parrish took on a supporting role that was small but essential in giving weight to a performance that depended on silence and observation.
It was a cold, calculated career decision.
But Parrish never stepped away from television entirely. He guest-starred in episodes of The Good Wife in 2013 and joined the cast of Quantico in 2017 as a political strategist. His ability to shift from vulnerability to arrogance in a single gesture helped him survive the oblivion that so often swallows child actors.
In 2023 he took part in the international series One Trillion Dollars, filmed in several locations across Europe. It is a project that reflects his interest in global productions outside the closed circuit of Hollywood. Parrish lives in a delicate balance where the massive fame of his youth has given way to a premium supporting-actor schedule in which he chooses his appearances very carefully.
The actor lives in Los Angeles and keeps his private life off the press's radar since his marriage to Kathryn Wahl in 2015.
