Sara Paxton started working before she was old enough to vote. In 1997, she was already sharing the screen with Jim Carrey in Liar Liar. She wasn't the typical textbook child prodigy, but her presence on Los Angeles sets was steady throughout the 1990s.
The system didn't devour her.
In 2006, she starred in Aquamarine. It was the perfect moment when the industry tried to position her as the next big teen star. That mermaid and summer romance film grossed 23 million dollars in the United States. But she had other plans that didn't involve magazine covers for folders.
And then horror came calling.
In 2009, she starred in the new version of The Last House on the Left. It was an exercise in physical and acting endurance under the direction of Dennis Iliadis. Filming in South Africa was exhausting and erased any trace of the sweetness Hollywood had demanded of her years earlier.
In 2011, director Ti West gave her the lead role in The Innkeepers. They shot at a real hotel in Connecticut that was rumored to be haunted. That low-budget film redefined her image among specialized critics and independent film fans.
Paxton was never after mass fame, but after complex characters. In 2013, she took part in Cheap Thrills, a pitch-black comedy where money and human cruelty go hand in hand. The film won the audience award at the South by Southwest festival.
The industry tends to forget quickly those who don't follow the expected path.
In 2018, she played Donna Rice in The Front Runner. She worked side by side with Hugh Jackman under Jason Reitman's direction. The role demanded absolute restraint, since it depicted the political scandal that ended Gary Hart's career in the 1980s.
In 2022, she appeared in Blonde by Andrew Dominik. She played Miss Flynn in a Netflix production that sparked fierce debate among international critics. Paxton is credited alongside Ana de Armas in one of the film's tensest sequences.
In 2023, she premiered The Last Stop in Yuma County. It's a bleak crime thriller in which she plays Charlotte, a waitress caught in a desperate situation at an isolated gas station. The film was shot in just 20 days on desert locations in California.
The post-production budget for that film was kept below one million dollars.
