Three beer bottles clacking rhythmically across the fingers of a small, electric guy. David Patrick Kelly improvised that line in 1979, and it became stuck in the collective memory of gang movies. He wasn't chasing fame, but he got stuck with a villain's reputation that would take decades to shake off.
That scene from The Warriors changed his bank account.
He was born in Detroit in 1951 into a family where music was the main language. His father played piano, and he soon became interested in guitar and composition. But theater crossed his path while he was studying at university, and he decided to move to New York to try his luck.
He landed his first major Broadway role in the musical Working in 1978. Critics noticed his nervous energy. He was an actor who took up more space than his stature would suggest.
Walter Hill gave him the role of Luther in The Warriors after seeing him on stage. Kelly decided his character shouldn't be a conventional thug. So he added childlike gestures and a shrill voice that proved far more unsettling than brute force.
That shoot on the streets of New York was total chaos, with real gangs watching over the set.
His relationship with David Lynch began in 1990 with Wild at Heart. Lynch saw in him a collaborator who could understand surrealism without asking unnecessary questions. That's why he cast him as Jerry Horne in Twin Peaks.
That character eating a brie sandwich next to his on-screen brother became a strange moment in American television.
And it worked like a charm.
In the mid-nineties, he appeared in The Crow as T-Bird. It was a production marked by the tragedy of Brandon Lee, but Kelly kept his professionalism amid constant mourning. In 1996, he worked under Spike Lee in Girl 6 after having been part of Malcolm X a few years earlier.
He never gave up his career as a professional musician.
In 2015, he joined the cast of John Wick to play Charlie, the man who cleans up the crime scenes. It's a brief role that shows Kelly does his best work when he uses the fewest words in the script.
By 2022, he had returned to Broadway in Into the Woods, playing the Narrator and the Mysterious Man. His voice still carried the sharp edge that made him famous in the seventies.
In 2023, he joined the series The Walking Dead: Dead City to bring a character named Silas to life. The show was shot mainly on locations in New Jersey and New York during the fall. His contract stipulated night shoots that went over ten hours a day.
