The elegance of the supporting role

Haviland Morris never set out to be the friendly face of the eighties. In 1984, John Hughes chose her to play Caroline Mulford in Sixteen Candles, and audiences encountered a presence that broke the mold of teen comedy. She wasn't the typical girl next door. She had a poise that bordered on coolness, which allowed her to avoid the flatter roles of her generation.

Commercial cinema is a talent grinder.

Six years later came the chaos of Joe Dante. In Gremlins 2: The New Batch, she brought Marla Bloodstone to life with almost manic energy. The shoot was complex because of the many practical effects and puppets on the set in 1990. The film didn't earn what was expected at its release but gained value over the decades in the home video market.

Many actors panic when the phone starts ringing less often. Morris made a pragmatic decision before the industry turned its back on her completely. In 1997, she appeared in Home Alone 3 and soon after began looking toward New York City real estate. She obtained her real estate broker's license and specialized in the Manhattan market.

And the gamble paid off.

Discipline and Brick

But she didn't give up acting. During the years 2000 and 2010, she turned to television with substantial roles in legal dramas. She appeared in The Good Wife and in several installments of the Law & Order franchise. For her, acting was no longer a financial necessity but a craft to practice sparingly.

Her voice was also heard in digital projects. In 2012, she lent her talent to the video game Max Payne 3, voicing Michelle Payne. Her career branched off in directions her eighties co-stars never even imagined.

In 2022, she played Mary Courtenay in the series City on a Hill. Her ability to switch from a movie set to negotiating the sale of an Upper West Side penthouse defines her professional maturity. Juggling two careers so different requires an iron discipline that few maintain in New York.

It wasn't all red carpets.

In 2023, she appeared in the series The Good Fight, maintaining her presence on prestige television. Morris remains affiliated with the real estate agency Corcoran Group in New York City. Official property records in Manhattan list her as one of the most active agents in her ZIP code.
