Bill Cosby was America's dad until he wasn't. In the sixties, no one imagined that the guy joking about orange juice would end up in a cell in Pennsylvania. His rise began in the comedy clubs of Philadelphia and New York, where he avoided racial humor to focus on family anecdotes.
By 1965, American television was a solid block of white granite. But Cosby landed the lead role in I Spy alongside Robert Culp. He won three consecutive Emmy Awards and proved that a Black actor could lead an action series without falling into the stereotypes of the era.
And the industry bowed at his feet.
That success allowed him to produce his own projects and make his way into living rooms across the world. In 1969 he launched The Bill Cosby Show on NBC. He wasn't just a funny actor. He was a producer with tight control over his image and his scripts.
During the eighties, his power reached absurd heights. The premiere of The Cosby Show in 1984 rescued the NBC network from technical bankruptcy. The series featured an upper-class Black family, with a doctor father and a lawyer mother, something that clashed with social reality but delighted advertisers.
Sixty-three million viewers tuned in every week to follow the adventures of the Huxtables. Cosby ended up as the face of brands like Jell-O and Coca-Cola. His salary per episode defied every pay scale of the era.
But the tight control he exercised on set hid a different reality. He demanded constant script changes and supervised every last detail of the extras' wardrobe. His public image as an educator and moral guide was a meticulously crafted construction.
His luck ran out all at once.
In 1992, the series ended after eight seasons at the top of the ratings. From that point on, he tried to repeat the formula with Cosby in 1996, but audiences no longer connected with his style as they had. Wholesome humor was starting to feel stale to new generations.
The silence was finally broken in 2014. A video of a monologue by comedian Hannibal Buress went viral, and accusations of sexual assault began piling up in the newspapers. More than sixty women described similar experiences spanning several decades of impunity.
Three to ten years in prison was the sentence he received in 2018 for sexual assault. The trial destroyed his reputation and led universities across the country to revoke his honorary degrees. His series disappeared from streaming platforms almost overnight.
In June 2021, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court overturned his conviction on a procedural technicality. He was released from prison immediately. The court argued that a former prosecutor had promised he would not be prosecuted if he testified in a civil lawsuit.
Bill Cosby returned to his home in Philadelphia at age 83. His lawyers tried to organize a stand-up tour in 2023, but most theaters turned down the proposal for fear of protests. The insurance on his Massachusetts mansion amounted to several thousand dollars a year before the latest civil lawsuits.
