Sean Hayes grew up in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, surrounded by sheet music and trained as a classical pianist, a side of him almost no one associates with his face. Before turning twenty, he was already running the music department of a theater in Chicago. He intended to make a living from the keys, but the acting bug took hold during his years at Illinois State University.
In 1998, he accepted the role of Jack McFarland in Will & Grace after turning down his first audition because he didn't want to pay for a plane ticket to Los Angeles.
That character earned him seven consecutive Emmy nominations between 2000 and 2006. He won the award only once, in 2000, but his on-screen presence often overshadowed the series' nominal leads. Audiences bought into his manic energy and impossible choreography.
And the gamble paid off.
But success in sitcoms often comes with heavy baggage in the form of typecasting. Hayes spent years trying to get casting directors to see something more than a histrionic neighbor. In 2012, he played Larry in the film The Three Stooges, directed by the Farrelly brothers. It was a work of pure physical technique that divided critics but allowed him to show that his talent went beyond the verbal joke.
He founded Hazy Mills Productions with Todd Milliner so he could stop waiting for calls that never came. From that office, they launched projects like Grimm in 2011 and Hot in Cleveland in 2010. He didn't want to just act, because he needed to control the money flow and creative decisions from the ground up.
That's how he became a producer with a good eye for commercial formats.
In 2020, he launched the podcast SmartLess with Jason Bateman and Will Arnett. What started as a conversation between friends grew into a 80 million dollar business when Amazon bought the distribution rights in 2021. The format broke down the barrier between the actor and the audience, showing a Hayes far drier and more pragmatic than his fictional characters.
Theater was always his refuge when Hollywood got tough. In 2010, he starred in the Broadway musical Promises, Promises alongside Kristin Chenoweth. It was his first major validation on the New York stage.
In 2023, he won the Tony Award for Best Actor for his role in Good Night, Oscar. He played Oscar Levant, a brilliant, tormented pianist who struggled with addiction and mental health issues. It closed a circle that began in his teens in front of a piano in Illinois.
Levant's role required playing pieces of great technical difficulty live during the performance.
Sean Hayes married Scott Icenogle in 2014 after eight years of a private relationship. As of 2024, he maintains his residence in Los Angeles, focusing on executive producing and the New York theater scene. His estimated net worth exceeds $20 million according to industry financial records.
