Jennifer Garner was enrolled in Chemical Engineering at Denison University when theater crossed her path. That change of direction in 1994 was not a romantic decision but a need for expression that her parents took time to come to terms with. New York was the first stop, where she worked as an understudy in Broadway productions, earning just 150 dollars a week.
That financial insecurity ended when she decided to move to Los Angeles.
In 2001, J.J. Abrams handed her the script for Alias, and Garner's life changed completely. The role of Sydney Bristow demanded exhausting physical work, which she performed herself in most of the high-risk sequences. The series not only earned her a Golden Globe but also placed her among the few women capable of carrying a espionage drama on commercial television at the time.
For five seasons, she learned to speak several languages and handle weapons on set. And even though the demands were intense, she never let the character consume her identity off camera.
Success on television allowed her to move into film with projects that played up a friendlier image. In 2004, she starred in 13 Going on 30, and the movie grossed 96 million dollars worldwide. It was the exact moment Hollywood realized her face sold tickets without the need for special effects or colorful wigs.
And the gamble paid off.
But Garner didn't want to be stuck in the role of the girl next door. In 2005, she founded her own production company, Vandalia Films, to have control over the stories she wanted to tell. This move allowed her to manage her shooting schedules and choose scripts that steered away from the big studio blockbusters of those years.
Years later, she decided to diversify her income beyond the film sets. In 2017, she co-founded Once Upon a Farm, an organic food company for kids that quickly reached a valuation of 100 million dollars. For her, business has always been an extension of her personal control over her public image.
The industry stopped seeing her as just an actress.
Garner's career has had deep valleys, where she preferred supporting roles in dramas such as Dallas Buyers Club in 2013. That restrained performance alongside Matthew McConaughey reminded critics that her dramatic range was still intact. But audiences kept asking for action, and she answered with Peppermint in 2018 to prove her physical training was far from a thing of the past.
In 2024, she returned to the role of Elektra in Deadpool & Wolverine after nearly two decades away from the superhero genre. The shoot demanded a high-performance training regimen, which the actress documented with technical rigor in her gym sessions. But this time, the return wasn't about launching a franchise. It was about closing a professional chapter that began at the start of the century.
The film's production cost 200 million dollars.
