John Stephens spent his days crunching numbers in spreadsheets at Boston Consulting Group. He held a degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a secure future in the corporate world. But his nights belonged to the clubs of New York. There, he sat at the piano and looked for a crack in the music industry under a name that wasn't yet his own.
Kanye West heard his demos and decided that the young man from Ohio needed a stage name with more weight. Legend was the tag poet J. Ivy gave him because his sound reminded him of the classics. In 2004, he released Get Lifted. He sold millions of copies and won three Grammy Awards in a single night.
And the gamble paid off.
Music soon felt too small for him. In 2014, he co-wrote Glory with Common for the film Selma. He won the Oscar for Best Original Song and realized his place was also on the big screen. He didn't limit himself to lending his voice to soundtracks. He founded the production company Get Lifted Film Co. to control the creative process from the ground up.
In 2018, he reached EGOT status after winning an Emmy for the special Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert. He is one of the few artists in history to have an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. He achieved this in barely a decade of steady work across different disciplines.
His role in La La Land in 2016 as Keith was a statement of intent. He didn't go for the spotlight, but he wanted to be part of the projects that defined the visual aesthetic of the moment. He produced Monster in 2018 and got involved in the documentary Giving Voice in 2020. His strategy is to finance stories that major studios tend to overlook because they lack immediate commercial appeal.
Because the piano is no longer his only tool of the trade.
The business behind the artist is as precise as his vocal technique. Legend sold his music catalog to BMG and KKR in 2022 for an amount analysts placed at around forty million dollars. That financial move allowed him to focus on his work as an executive producer and diversify his interests into television.
In 2023, he oversaw the production of various content for streaming platforms and kept his seat on The Voice to ensure a steady media presence. In 2024, his production company closed new development deals for scripted projects that explore racial identity in the United States. He avoids big blockbusters to focus on mid-budget films where creative control is total.
The office of Get Lifted Film Co. in Los Angeles manages a portfolio of more than twenty projects at various stages of technical development.
