In October 2002, Ye crashed his car into another vehicle while returning late at night from a session in Los Angeles. He fractured his jaw in three places. Three weeks later, with his mouth wired shut and serious difficulty speaking, he paid out of his own pocket for the studio hours to record the vocals for his first solo track.

Until then the industry saw him as nothing more than a successful producer after he crafted the beats for Jay-Z's The Blueprint in 2001. No one at the record label believed that this kid from Chicago in designer polo shirts could top the charts selling rap.

Nobody wanted to finance an entire album for him.

But the release of The College Dropout in 2004 sold more than 440,000 copies in its first week and shifted the priorities of American commercial music. From that victory he established a way of working built on technical obsession, bringing together dozens of musicians and classical arrangers to lock themselves away for months in studios in Los Angeles and Hawaii.

The filmmaker syndrome

Ye never conceived his songs apart from a screen. His music projects always functioned as soundtracks to broader visual concepts, a restlessness that led him to team up with filmmakers such as Spike Jonze in 2009 to shoot the short film We Were Once a Fairytale.

In 2010 he doubled down with Runaway, a 35-minute mid-length film shot in Prague with cinematography by Florian Sigl and costumes designed by Phillip Lim. The film served as a visual companion to the compositions of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, blending contemporary ballet with a mythological narrative loaded with aesthetic excess.

He spent millions of his own dollars sustaining that short-lived structure.

In 2015 he brought in artist and director Steve McQueen to an industrial warehouse on the outskirts of Paris. Together they filmed the joint music video for All Day and I Feel Like That in a single continuous shot, capturing a real physical exhaustion that was far from the usual codes of the promotional music video.

Brutalist sets and industrial rupture

During the production of Donda in 2021, he turned dress rehearsals into sporting events. He moved into a windowless cell beneath the stands of Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium while dozens of engineers mixed tracks in real time in front of thousands of spectators.

That entire behind-the-scenes journey was laid bare in the documentary Jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy, released in 2022 after more than two decades of accumulated footage by documentarian Clarence Simmons.

And then the corporate machinery cut ties.

In October 2022, after weeks of public statements and antisemitic remarks made in the press and on social media, Adidas terminated its multimillion-dollar distribution contract. Within twenty-four hours his net worth dropped by roughly 1,500 million dollars, triggering the swift cancellation of his deals with banks, talent agencies and textile factories.

Cut off from traditional distribution channels, Ye built his own independent structure. In February 2024, he released Vultures 1 with Ty Dolla $ign through his YZY label, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart without the backing of a major corporation.

In August 2024 he released the follow-up, Vultures 2, sent to streaming servers with unmastered tracks that he kept patching in the following days through audio updates. That year he ended up facing copyright infringement lawsuits filed by the heirs of Donna Summer over the unauthorized use of sound samples.
