Christopher Catesby Harington didn't know his name was Christopher until he turned eleven. At home, he has always been Kit. His real name first appeared on a school exam, an early sign that his identity would always be tied to labels imposed from the outside. His family tree includes an inventor of the flush toilet and several English barons. But the aristocratic pedigree didn't do him much good when he started studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
In 2008, he landed the role of Albert in the stage play War Horse while he was still a student. It caught the attention of the casting directors of a new HBO series looking for unknown faces for a medieval fantasy project. He went from the West End stage to the glaciers of Iceland without a break. He had no idea that the contract would tie him to a character for nearly a decade of his life.
And then came the silence.
Playing Jon Snow in Game of Thrones brought him money and suffocating fame. Filming the Battle of the Bastards in 2016 was the physical turning point in his relationship with fiction. It meant twenty-five days of shooting in the rain and mud of Northern Ireland. The actor later admitted that the series finale in 2019 left him mentally exhausted.
After the saga ended in 2019, he checked into a rehab center in Connecticut. He needed to address stress and alcohol use stemming from constant media pressure. It was a necessary pause to realize there was life beyond the wolf-fur cloaks. Massive success can sometimes work like a gilded cage that keeps you from seeing your next professional step.
In 2018, he married Rose Leslie (his co-star on the series), creating a real bond with the project that changed his life. The couple decided to settle in a 15th-century country house in Suffolk to escape the noise of London and Los Angeles. But the industry doesn't easily forget a face that has generated so much money.
In 2021, he entered the Marvel Universe with the film Eternals, playing Dane Whitman. It was a big-budget bet that failed to win over international critics, who found it lacking in pace. But Harington decided his path lay with flawed, less heroic characters. So he began looking for projects with independent studios and streaming platforms.
In 2023, he appeared in the anthology series Extrapolations on Apple TV+, which tackled climate change from a dramatic perspective. That same year he starred in the thriller Blood for Dust, playing a small-time arms dealer. He was desperate to break free of the noble knight image that audiences had long assigned him.
Theater became his refuge once again.
During the summer of 2024, he starred in Slave Play at the Noel Coward Theatre in London. The play caused a lot of controversy in the British tabloids because of its exclusive performances for Black audiences, but the actor firmly defended the production. That same year he joined the cast of the third season of Industry, playing Henry Muck, a green energy executive. It's a role that moves him decisively away from epic drama and into corporate cynicism.
In 2024, the horror film The Beast Within grossed barely 14,000 dollars on its U.S. opening weekend.
