Conleth Hill was born in Ballycastle in 1964. He is an actor who keeps his distance from loud fame and the artificial glitter of red carpets. Many viewers took almost a decade to realize that the man who played Lord Varys in Game of Thrones had, in fact, a thick, silver mane of hair.
Discretion is his working method.
Hill's prestige was not forged on big television sets. His natural habitat was always the wooden stage and direct contact with the audience. In 2001, he won his first Olivier Award for Stones in His Pockets, a play in which he played several characters with little more than a change in posture or tone of voice.
He repeated the feat in 2005 with the musical The Producers. But for Hill, theater was never a stepping stone to Hollywood. It was the final destination where he perfected the art of physical disappearance before the audience's eyes.
In 2011, he accepted the role that would raise his international profile but not change his lifestyle. For eight seasons, Hill shaved his head every morning to play "Spider." It was an exercise in absolute restraint in a series that often leaned on fire, sex, and blood.
His ability to convey menace with just a look made him a key cog in HBO's machine. Hill was paid for what he didn't say more than for what he said on screen. And that subtlety allowed him to outlast nearly all of his fellow cast members in the series.
Despite his global exposure, Hill would return to his home in Northern Ireland after each shoot. He never bought a mansion in Los Angeles or courted the favor of the British tabloids. So when the series ended in 2019, few people knew what his next career move would be.
In 2022 he starred in Holding, an adaptation of Graham Norton's novel filmed entirely in County Cork. He played Sergeant PJ Collins, a lonely and somewhat clumsy man in a village where nothing ever happened until a body turned up.
It was his first major leading role on British television after the end of the epic fantasy series.
In 2023 he joined the cast of The Power of Parker. Hill plays Dougie, a character who lives in that gray area between down-to-earth comedy and human pathos. It is a register he handles with ease, because he knows the temperament of the islands and their everyday miseries well.
He also appeared in The Way in 2024. Directed by Michael Sheen, the production explores social unrest and uprisings in a small Welsh town. Hill brings a much-needed gravitas here that balances the surreal tone of the visual approach.
In 2024, Hill worked on A Gentleman in Moscow alongside Ewan McGregor. His schedule remains packed with high-profile side projects and leading roles in niche productions. His salary per episode in the final seasons of the HBO series exceeded $100,000.
