Dominic Cooper was born in Greenwich and had no backup plan. He studied at LAMDA because that was the path if you wanted to be an actor in London in the late nineties. His first big break was The History Boys in 2004. That Alan Bennett play took him on tour around the world and ended up in a film adaptation that grossed over $13 million.
And that was the end of his anonymity.
He shared an apartment with James Corden during their early years in London. While one was searching for his place in comedy, the other was preparing for period roles at the BBC. But the real breakthrough came in 2008, when he put on swim trunks to sing Abba songs on a Greek beach. The release of Mamma Mia! gave him a visibility that theater never could.
That film earned 600 million dollars worldwide. Cooper played Sky, which immediately put him on the radar of major Los Angeles studios. But the actor decided he didn't want to spend the rest of his life in light romantic comedies.
In 2011, he joined Disney’s machine to play Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger. It was a supporting but crucial role for the franchise’s timeline. That contract allowed him to choose riskier projects in British television, such as Fleming in 2014, where he brought to life the creator of James Bond.
But the real money was in the comics.
AMC signed him in 2016 to star in Preacher. Over four seasons and 43 episodes, Cooper played Jesse Custer (a preacher with alcohol problems and supernatural powers). It was a physically demanding shoot that completely departed from his image as a traditional English heartthrob. Critics praised his ability to carry such a bizarre storyline for years.
It wasn't all red carpets.
He took on lower-profile projects such as the action thriller Stratton in 2017. The film had little impact at the box office, and production suffered major delays after Henry Cavill left the original project. Cooper came in as a last-minute replacement, but the script didn't help salvage the final result.
In 2023, he returned to British television with The Gold. The series tells the story of the Brink’s-Mat robbery that took place in 1983, and Cooper plays Edwyn Cooper (an ambitious lawyer who launders money for the mafia). Filming focused on recreating the atmosphere of London’s City in the 1980s with absolute technical precision.
The actor has always preferred shooting in Europe when the script has enough dramatic weight. In 2024, he took part in the war drama The Last Front, in which he plays a father trying to protect his family during World War I. The film was shot on location in Belgium with a budget of €15 million.
To prepare for this kind of role, he usually works with military advisors for weeks. Despite his reputation as a method actor, he prefers the discipline of the set to constant improvisation. In 2025, his schedule includes the second season of his crime drama for the BBC and a stage production in London’s West End.
The production of The Gold confirmed an investment of 30 million pounds for a follow-up in the United Kingdom.
