Matt Stokoe was born in Durham in 1989, and his training at the National Youth Theatre laid the foundation for everything that followed. The northern England setting gives a dry edge that the actor has known how to bring to his most complex characters. There was no sudden media explosion.
His entry into the British industry was gradual and without much fanfare. He started with small parts in police dramas until fantasy television came knocking. Before that, he had to take on odd jobs to pay the rent in the capital.
He was ready for the mud.
In 2012, he joined the cast of Misfits for its fourth season. Playing Alex forced him to work on physicality over dialogue. It was the moment British audiences began to put a face to an actor who shied away from the spotlight.
Period television is often polished, but Stokoe preferred the darker side of history. In 2013, he appeared in The Village as Gerard Eyre. The series depicted the harshness of rural life, and he brought a restraint that few actors of his generation could manage.
That restraint opened the door to bigger-budget projects. In 2014, he laced up the musketeer's boots to bring Captain Paters to life in The Musketeers, a BBC production where physical action was the daily norm. He performed almost all of his stunt scenes without doubles for months.
Between 2017 and 2019, his face became a familiar sight in homes thanks to Jamestown. In this drama about the first settlers in Virginia, he played James Read. Filming on location in Hungary and the demanding scripts by Bill Gallagher gave him a definitive air of maturity.
There was no turning back.
Many actors wait for the phone to ring, but Stokoe decided to create his own material. In 2020 he wrote the screenplay for Rose. This psychological horror film grew out of a creative need that acting alone could not satisfy at the time.
But the project was not just a writing exercise. He also starred in it alongside Sophie Rundle, his partner in real life, under the direction of Jennifer Sheridan. The film was independently financed and secured international distribution despite the paralysis of the film industry during that period.
It was his riskiest bet.
In 2020, he also joined the cast of Cursed for Netflix. His take on Gawain sought to move away from traditional Arthurian myths through a much more violent approach. The series was not renewed for a second season, but his performance received positive reviews for the intensity he brought to the knight.
In 2023 he joined the cast of the series The Diplomat, and in 2024 he premiered After the Flood, in which he plays Pat. Stokoe maintains his residence in the United Kingdom and avoids industry parties whenever he can. His salary per episode on cable productions now sits among the highest standards in British television.
