The supporting star nobody can forget

Adrian Scarborough has a gift for selective invisibility. He's one of those faces viewers recognize instantly, even if his name is often just out of reach. He doesn't mind. His lack of media ego has allowed him to move from a period drama to a sitcom without his characters' seams showing in the slightest.

He was born in Melton Mowbray in 1968 and trained at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. There, he learned that discretion is a tool of the trade. In the British industry, being a character actor means being ready to work all 365 days of the year if you know how to stay impeccably in the background.

And it works.

In 2011, his career took a technical turn when he won the Laurence Olivier Award for his role in the play After the Dance. It wasn't a fluke. He'd spent years honing his craft on the National Theatre stage in London under directors who valued precision, not just physical presence.

From Gavin's living room to the war of Sam Mendes

The general public inevitably associates him with Pete Sutcliffe in the series Gavin & Stacey. The role began in 2007 and gave him a huge boost in popularity. But Scarborough never let himself be pigeonholed as a comedy actor. He knew his slight build and intelligent gaze were a good fit for much darker stories.

In 2010, he appeared in The King’s Speech as a BBC radio announcer. It was a brief role. But his ability to convey the tension of a live radio broadcast in the 30s shows that there are no small parts for an actor who has mastered the rhythm of a scene.

Her relationship with director Sam Mendes led to her joining 1917 in 2019. In this war film, she played Major Hepburn. The technical demands of shooting in long takes required absolute concentration. Scarborough delivered flawlessly in a production where a single mistake by a supporting actor could cost thousands of pounds in film and shooting time.

Precision is his trademark.

The detective who arrived later in life

It took decades before he was offered a leading role on television. The Chelsea Detective premiered in 2022, with him playing Detective Inspector Max Arnold. The character lives on a houseboat and gets around by bicycle in one of London's wealthiest neighborhoods. Scarborough handles this visual contrast with astonishing naturalness.

In 2023, he appeared in the film The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die as Aldhelm. It was a physically demanding shoot that brought one of the most closely followed historical sagas of the past decade to a close. Scarborough brought the necessary gravity to a tale of swords and mud without losing the humanity that defines him.

But the theater remains his safe haven for honing his craft. In 2024, he returned to the stage in an adaptation of The 39 Steps, proving that his physical abilities are still as sharp as ever despite the passage of time. He still prefers long rehearsals to short red-carpet appearances.

Season 3 of The Chelsea Detective was filmed entirely on location in London, with a fixed production budget per episode.
