1997's Lucky Break

Daniel Wu landed in Hong Kong in 1997 with just $500 in his pocket and an architecture degree from the University of Oregon. He wasn't chasing fame or the film industry's applause. He just wanted to witness the handover of the colony's sovereignty while sleeping on friends' couches. But his looks and natural screen presence opened the doors to modeling before he could consider returning to California.

Director Yonfan spotted him in a clothing ad on a billboard and knew he had found his lead for Bishonen. Wu didn't speak Cantonese fluently and had little technical experience in front of a film camera. He accepted the challenge anyway. That LGBT-themed film from 1998 broke new ground in the local industry and immediately put him on the radar of major Asian studios.

It was the start of a frenetic career.

His martial arts training from the age of eleven allowed him to perform action stunts without constantly relying on stunt doubles. In 1999, he appeared in Gen-X Cops. This youth action film positioned him as the generational successor that Hong Kong cinema urgently needed as it looked for new international faces.

Fights, Wires and the Support of Jackie Chan

His breakthrough came in 2004 with New Police Story. He played a complex, unhinged villain that earned him the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Horse Awards. He worked side by side with Jackie Chan and proved he could carry dramatic weight opposite living legends of the genre without being overshadowed.

And the gamble paid off.

After making more than 60 films in Asia, he decided it was time to try his luck in the American market. In 2015, he produced and starred in the series Into the Badlands for AMC. Over three seasons, he led one of the most choreographed action shows on North American television. But he didn't only act, as he also served as executive producer to oversee the quality of the fight scenes.

The risk was high, but the reward was global.

A Return to Roots and Speed

In 2021, he appeared in Reminiscence alongside Hugh Jackman, and in 2023 he joined the cast of the series American Born Chinese. Wu plays the Monkey King in this adaptation, which explores Asian identity in the United States through fantasy. It is a role that connects directly with his own experience as the son of immigrants in Berkeley.

Off camera, he is a serious racing enthusiast. In 2024, he competed in the Ferrari Challenge North America, achieving competitive results on prestigious international circuits. Wu approaches mechanics and speed with the same discipline he brings to Wu-Shu or building design.

In 2025, he joined the cast of the action film With Love, directed by Jonathan Eusebio. The production had an estimated budget of $30 million to stage the choreographed fight scenes on location in Los Angeles.
