Louis Koo spent twenty months in a juvenile detention center before turning twenty.
He was a young gang member in a Hong Kong that still carried the scent of British colonial rule, and that stain on his record could have ended any public ambition. But television came knocking in the early nineties because his face fit the beauty standards of the time. He started out as a model in music videos before moving on to TVB.
His skin was pale and his look recalled a porcelain prince. In 1995 he starred in The Condor Heroes 95, and Asian audiences immediately embraced him as the ultimate romantic hero. That role brought him a fame he still manages today with a mix of reticence and professional coolness.
The past did not sink him.
In the late nineties, he decided he didn't want to be just a pretty face for housewives. He began artificially tanning to toughen up his image and move away from traditional leading-man roles. The change worked because action film directors started seeing him as a believable tough guy.
In 2001 he left television after finishing A Step into the Past. It was his last series before devoting himself entirely to the big screen. He repeatedly collaborated with director Johnnie To on films such as Election in 2005 and Drug War in 2012. In these films Koo refined a minimalist style of acting in which he barely moves a muscle in his face to convey menace.
He won the Best Actor award at the 2018 Hong Kong Film Awards for his role in Paradox. That night, the auditorium rose to its feet to applaud a man who was already the center of gravity of the local industry. But his real influence was not in front of the cameras.
In 2013, he founded One Cool Group with a clear vision. The Hong Kong film industry was in a critical state due to a lack of investment and the growing influence of mainland China. Koo decided to inject his own capital to finance projects that other studios considered risky or unprofitable.
He financed more than twenty films in less than a decade.
His company does not only produce content but also invests in post-production and visual effects technology. In 2022, he premiered Warriors of Future after a development process that dragged on for almost ten years. The film grossed 81 million Hong Kong dollars and surpassed previous box office records for a locally produced film.
Koo is known for his absolute discretion in his personal life. No official relationships have ever been reported, and he rarely gives interviews that don't have a direct promotional purpose. In 2024 he played Cyclone in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In under the direction of Soi Cheang. The project had a budget of 300 million Hong Kong dollars to recreate the Kowloon Walled City.
In 2024 the company One Cool Group had operating offices in Hong Kong, China, Thailand and South Korea.
