Nick Cheung spent five years patrolling the streets of Hong Kong before stepping onto a film set. This isn't a promotional line meant to sell his on-screen toughness; it's his real service record with the police during the 1980s. He left the uniform because his superiors denied his transfer to the Criminal Investigation Department (the CID), and that refusal changed Asian cinema over the following decades.
In 1989, he made his film debut in No Way Out, playing a police officer, fittingly enough. His connection with Danny Lee got him into the industry through supporting roles in low-budget action films. But the stigma of his slight build condemned him for years to being the comic relief in television productions for the ATV and TVB networks.
His hunger for respect changed everything.
During the nineties, Cheung was the recurring face of gambling comedies directed by Wong Jing. They were profitable films, but they kept him in a gray zone of acting, where only his gift for grimacing and quick punchlines was sought. Despite the money he had accumulated, he decided to break with that inertia and look for characters who did not depend on the audience's laughter.
The transformation came through his partnership with director Dante Lam. In 2008, he starred in The Beast Stalker, and the impact was immediate because he shed any trace of his comedic past. For playing this tormented kidnapper, he won seven Best Actor awards in a single year (including the Hong Kong Film Award and the Golden Horse). Seven trophies in twelve months silenced those who still saw him as a supporting TV actor.
And the industry stopped laughing and started applauding.
His commitment to realism pushed him to dangerous physical extremes. To shoot Unbeatable in 2013, he spent a year training in mixed martial arts and following a diet that brought his body fat down to professional competition levels. He was 46 years old when he went through that process. The film grossed more than 44 million Hong Kong dollars and gave him full creative control over his projects.
But Nick Cheung didn't want to limit himself to receiving other people's scripts. In 2014, he made the leap to directing with Hungry Ghost Ritual because he felt the horror genre in his hometown was losing its identity. He wasn't seeking approval from international critics; he wanted to revive the traditional ghost films he watched as a child.
His work as a director is dark and technical. In 2015, he released Keeper of Darkness, where, in addition to directing, he played an exorcist with platinum hair and a body covered in tattoos. The film did well at the box office, but Cheung preferred not to pile up directing projects so as not to oversaturate his own image. So he went back to pure acting under directors with powerful visions.
In 2019, he worked on Integrity, and in 2023 he starred in Wolf Hiding under the direction of Marc Ma. For the latter film, the production budget reached 100 million yuan to ensure action choreography that could compete with the global market. His current working method is to choose just one major production a year to maintain the intensity his characters demand.
Total control was his only goal.
In 2024, he took part in the shoot of Pegasus, where the investment in digital effects and chase logistics exceeded 20 million dollars. The post-production contract for his next project with the production company Universe Entertainment was signed for an eighteen-month technical editing period.
