Anthony Wong won the Best Actor award at the 1994 Hong Kong Film Awards for playing a killer who cooked buns with human meat. It was the first time a role in a Category III film, the most restrictive adult rating on the local market, earned the highest recognition. That performance in The Untold Story shattered the conventions of the Asian film industry.
His face never fit the aesthetic standards of Hong Kong leading men. The son of a British officer who abandoned the family and a Chinese mother, Wong grew up managing a mixed identity in a hostile environment. That sense of exclusion became his greatest dramatic asset when he entered the drama academy in the early eighties.
The system saw him as an outsider, but he spoke the language of the street.
During the nineties, he shot dozens of movies a year. Many were B-movie productions he accepted purely for financial survival. But amid that industrial chaos, titles like Beast Cops emerged in 1998. He won his second Best Actor award and proved he could carry a police drama with the same dryness as a bloody slasher.
And the industry began to respect him as more than a luxury supporting actor.
Johnnie To recruited him for The Mission in 1999. In this film, he played a methodical gangster who needed little dialogue to command authority on screen. The movie was shot without a final script, and Wong improvised much of his body language. As a result, his presence became indispensable to the new noir cinema of the former colony.
In 2002, he appeared in Infernal Affairs as Superintendent Wong. The film revitalized the spy genre worldwide and spawned a Hollywood remake directed by Martin Scorsese. His salary for that production was 125,000 dollars, a modest figure compared with the action stars of the time.
But international recognition did not guarantee him a straight career path.
Because his career shifted gears after the 2014 protests in Hong Kong. Wong publicly supported the pro-democracy movement, and the price was an absolute ban in the mainland Chinese market. Major studios stopped sending him scripts for fear of commercial retaliation from Beijing. He went from being the most sought-after actor to working on independent projects with minimal budgets.
In 2018, he starred in Still Human, giving up his usual salary. He played a paralyzed man who forms a complex relationship with his Filipino caregiver. The project did very well at the box office and restored his relevance outside genre circuits. That role earned him his third Best Actor award in Hong Kong.
He never apologized for his political views.
In 2022, he returned to the top with The Sunny Side of the Street. He won the Best Actor award at the Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan for playing a grumpy taxi driver who helps a refugee child. The shoot was grueling, with the crew dealing with constant logistical restrictions and a suffocating production schedule.
The film The Sunny Side of the Street had a total budget of 600,000 dollars.
