The Weight of a Famous Surname

Nicholas Tse never chose to be the center of attention. He was born into the spotlight as the son of actors Patrick Tse and Deborah Lee, a legacy that in the 1990s weighed more than any script. In 1996, he signed his first record deal under suffocating media pressure.

Because in Hong Kong, audiences booed him at his first live performances. Viewers saw him as a spoiled industry kid who was only there because of his family connections. Tse answered the insults by turning up his guitar until the shouts were drowned out by distortion.

And then he decided that to earn respect, he would have to bleed.

In 1998, he made his film debut in Young and Dangerous: The Prequel. He won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best New Actor, but what truly defined his career was his obsession with physical risk. He refused to use stunt doubles from day one. During the shoot of Gen-X Cops in 1999, he suffered a serious back injury that forced him to rethink his approach to the job.

Hong Kong insurers have put him on their blacklist.

Just like what happened to Jackie Chan, nobody wanted to take on the risks of an actor who would rather jump off a building than let a professional do it for him. In 2004, he shot New Police Story alongside his idol and proved that his commitment to realism was a matter of personal pride.

The Invisible Empire of the Pixel

Tse didn't limit himself to acting or singing teen Cantopop ballads. In 2003, he founded Post Production Office with a very modest starting capital. His company went on to handle 60% of the visual effects for commercials aired in Hong Kong. It was a smart move that diversified his influence in the industry beyond his public image.

But critics were slow to unanimously recognize his acting.

It was in 2011 that he won the Best Actor award for his role in The Stool Pigeon. He played a police informant with an intensity that erased any trace of his past as a teen idol. For the role, he had to lose weight and immerse himself in an emotional grit the audience didn't expect from him.

Knives and Customs

Starting in 2014, his career took an unconventional turn with the creation of his food brand. What began as a TV show called Chef Nic grew into a food business with branches across Asia. But action cinema never took a back seat to the kitchen. In 2021, he starred in Raging Fire alongside Donnie Yen in a duel that revived the pulse of the classic thriller.

In 2024, he worked on Customs Frontline, where, in addition to acting, he served as action director. He was in charge of choreographing every punch and every fall of his co-stars.

By 2025, he is scheduled to shoot New Police Story 2, where he takes on full directing duties for the first time. The production has a fixed budget of $45 million.
