Edison Chen landed in Hong Kong from Vancouver without a clear plan. He was 1999 years old, and studios were desperately looking for a new generation of stars to replace the classic action heroes. His debut in Gen-Y Cops in 2000 worked because his style didn't fit the traditional mold of local leading men.

And the industry snapped him up right away.

It all came to a halt because of a mismanaged hard drive. In February 2008, thousands of private photos of Chen with various film industry celebrities leaked online. The media fallout was so intense that the actor had to publicly apologize at a televised press conference.

He moved to the United States to escape the media pressure.

But leaving the screen didn't mean he disappeared professionally. In 2008, he had a brief appearance in The Dark Knight directed by Christopher Nolan. It was a small role that symbolized his effort to find refuge in Hollywood after the unofficial ban he faced in China for a long time. So he decided to put his energy into the textile business.

The Textile Reinvention and Comeback

His work as a businessman ended up being more profitable than acting. Through his brand CLOT, he brought Chinese design onto international runways. Earns millions of dollars a year thanks to exclusive contracts with top-tier sportswear brands whose releases sell out in minutes.

He never stopped being a controversial figure.

In 2019, he returned to Chinese cinemas with The Shadow Play, directed by Lou Ye. It was a quiet comeback that showed time had eased tensions with government censors. During 2023 and 2024, he focused on growing his brand in the Japanese market and on contemporary art projects.

In 2024, the market valuation of his creative companies exceeded one hundred million dollars.
