Jay Chou wasn't looking for the spotlight. In 1998, he was writing songs for others in a Taipei office, sleeping under the piano to save time. That voluntary isolation ended when he released his first album in 2000, because his style blended R&B with Chinese tradition in a way no one expected.
But movies came knocking on his door soon enough.
In 2005, he made his big-screen debut in Initial D and won the Golden Horse Award for Best New Actor. He was not a method actor (and had no intention of becoming one), but his restrained presence suited the pace of the street racing in the manga adaptation.
In 2006, he worked under Zhang Yimou in Curse of the Golden Flower. Sharing the frame with Gong Li and Chow Yun-fat forced Chou to harden his expression, and international critics noticed him for his ability to hold his own in a suffocating period drama.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2007, he decided that no one would understand his stories better than himself. He wrote, directed and starred in Secret, a time-travel romance where the piano drove the plot. The film grossed nearly ten million dollars across Asia and became a cult favorite among conservatory students in the region.
In 2011, he made the leap to the United States with The Green Hornet. He played Kato (the role that launched Bruce Lee) and had to learn English at breakneck speed during filming. The American press was harsh about the chemistry between the leads, but the film grossed $227 million worldwide.
But Chou never felt at home in the Los Angeles studio system.
In 2016, he took part in Now You See Me 2, playing Li, the owner of a magic shop in Macau. It was a supporting role that let him combine his real obsession (illusion) with his acting career. On set, producers confirmed that Chou spent more time doing card tricks for the crew than rehearsing his lines.
The Chinese music industry still revolves around his aesthetic decisions.
In 2022, he released his album Greatest Works of Art after six years without a record. The main music video was shot at the Samaritaine in Paris and worked like a high-end short film in which Chou interacts with representations of Dalí and Monet.
In 2024, the numbers from his world tour confirmed that his name still draws crowds in stadiums across Europe and Asia. Chou keeps full control over his image and editorial rights through his own company, JVR Music.
His estimated net worth exceeds 95 million dollars, according to Singapore financial records.
