Directed by David Yates and starring Eddie Redmayne, the film opens in New York in 1926. There, British wizard Newt Scamander arrives carrying a suitcase that holds spacious habitats for a collection of rare and dangerous magical creatures he has gathered on his travels around the world. In the city, the magical community lives in hiding from the No-Maj, and Mary Lou Barebone, a non-magical woman who runs the New Salem Philanthropic Society, preaches that witches and wizards are real and dangerous. While Newt watches her, one of his creatures, a Niffler, escapes from his luggage. Chasing it, he bumps into Jacob Kowalski, an aspiring baker who is not a wizard, and they accidentally swap suitcases. Newt now has to recover his creatures before the situation gets out of hand.
