Ezra Miller didn't need an acting school to win over Antonio Campos in 2008. At sixteen, he had a gaze that made the camera uneasy in Afterschool. That story about school recordings and accidental deaths defined the profile of an actor who seemed at ease with strangeness.
Independent film found a gold mine in his face.
In 2011, international recognition arrived with We Need to Talk About Kevin. Miller played a sociopathic teenager with a coldness that overshadowed the Tilda Swinton in several scenes. Critics in Cannes were won over by a physical presence that blended androgyny with latent violence.
But the leap to mainstream audiences came a year later. The Perks of Being a Wallflower put him on the map in 2012 as the soul of a generation looking for different role models. That role as Patrick allowed him to move away from his earlier darkness and play with an electric charisma he would later try to bring to major Hollywood productions.
Warner Bros. counted on his magnetism for two of the most important commercial pillars of the decade. In 2016, he joined the Harry Potter universe with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, playing Credence Barebone. It was a supporting but essential role in a storyline that stretched across three installments through 2022.
Signing on as Barry Allen for the DC Comics universe marked a total change of scale in his career. He appeared briefly in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 before taking a leading role in Justice League during 2017. The industry saw in Miller the generational successor capable of carrying an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars.
And then his personal life began to devour his public image.
The legal incidents in Iceland during 2020 opened a gap that kept widening. That video in a Reykjavik bar was the first warning of a spiral of problems that multiplied two years later. Between March and April 2022, Hawaii police arrested the actor several times for disorderly conduct and harassment at nightlife venues.
Things got worse in August 2022 when Vermont authorities charged him with burglarizing an unoccupied home. Miller ended up accepting a plea deal for criminal trespassing in January 2023 to avoid harsher penalties. One year of probation and a fine of $500 closed the legal chapter on a period of chaos that jeopardized his professional future.
Because the release of The Flash in 2023 turned into a crisis management problem for the studio. The film had cost $200 million, and the lead actor was barely able to take part in the official promotion due to his recovery and mental health process. The shoot of Dalíland in 2022, where he played a young Salvador Dalí, went almost unnoticed amid the media noise over his scandals.
The final worldwide box office for The Flash in 2023 came to $270 million.
