Jason Momoa stands nearly six feet six inches tall and weighs over 220 pounds of Polynesian muscle. Born in Honolulu in 1979, he grew up in rural Iowa surrounded by cornfields. That mix of exotic giant and farm boy defines his on-screen presence from the first minute.
In 1999, he was working at a surf shop when he was cast in Baywatch Hawaii. It was a start based entirely on his physique. The actor spent years trying to get the film industry to take him seriously beyond his six-pack abs and that red uniform.
But his past in television weighs heavily in Los Angeles. For a while, no one wanted to hire the beach guy for roles with real dialogue. So he decided to erase his trail and start over in genre projects that almost no one saw.
In 2005, he landed a spot in the cast of Stargate Atlantis. There, he began shaping the image of the man of few words that would later explode globally. The long hair and scars weren't makeup but part of his own personal image.
The casting for Game of Thrones in 2011 deceptively changed his luck. He played Khal Drogo by performing a Maori haka in front of the producers to show his strength. It was an absolute visual impact that put him on the map for every agency.
Nobody called him for months.
Momoa later admitted that after his stint on the HBO series, he went hungry. People thought he didn't speak English because his character only used an invented language. He was in debt and had two young kids in a Los Angeles house he couldn't afford.
In 2014, he tried to take control of his career by directing and starring in Road to Paloma. It was a small biker film with a minimal budget that flew under the radar of the general public. But it showed he understood the visual language behind the camera.
And the gamble paid off.
Zack Snyder cast him as Arthur Curry in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. The idea of a tattooed Aquaman with a rock star attitude broke with the classic comic concept. In 2018, the solo Aquaman film grossed more than $1,100 million worldwide.
Money stopped being a problem.
In 2021, he played Duncan Idaho in Dune under the direction of Denis Villeneuve. He moved away from leading roles to become a powerhouse supporting player with a different emotional weight. The actor was looking for projects where his physique wasn't the only selling point on the poster.
But he didn't give up on high-voltage commercial blockbusters. During 2023, he joined the Fast & Furious franchise, playing Dante Reyes in Fast X. His performance as an eccentric, psychopathic villain was one of the few things critics saved from that installment.
Momoa manages his projects through his production company, Pride of Gypsies. He has no interest in following the traditional path of Hollywood stars who just wait for their agent's call. He prefers to shoot documentaries about motorcycles or climb walls anywhere in the world while he waits for his next shoot.
In 2025, he stars in the adaptation of A Minecraft Movie with an estimated budget of $150 million.
