The Cowboy Who Couldn't Ride a Horse

Jon Voight arrived in New York with a clenched jaw and a set design degree under his arm. In 1967 he made his film debut in Fearless Frank, but nobody noticed that blond guy from Yonkers. The world had to wait two years to see him leaning against a corner in Manhattan wearing a cowboy hat that wasn't his.

Dustin Hoffman was already a star thanks to The Graduate, and Voight was an unknown when they shot Midnight Cowboy in 1969. The chemistry between the limping con man and the naive hustler broke box office records and the censorship of the era. It was the first and only film with an X rating to win the Oscar for Best Picture.

The risk was total.

That role as Joe Buck earned him his first Oscar nomination and put him on the radar of the major New Hollywood directors. But Voight didn't want to be a poster-boy leading man. He turned down easy roles to get muddy in Deliverance in 1972. The shoot on the Chattooga River was a physical ordeal in which the actors performed their own stunts without stunt doubles.

The Golden Statuette and the Desert of the 1980s

In 1978 he played a paraplegic Vietnam veteran in Coming Home. It was painstaking observational work at real rehabilitation centers. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1979, beating out names like Robert De Niro and Warren Beatty. That year, his salary soared past the million-dollar mark per film.

But massive success is a double-edged sword. During the 1980s, his pace of work dropped sharply due to personal decisions and a spiritual quest that drew him away from the spotlight. He took on minor projects until, in 1985, he got back on track with Runaway Train. That performance as an escaped convict brought him back into Academy Award contention.

The industry turned its back on him for a while.

Voight was never an easy actor for the California studios. His strong personality and demanding approach to scripts earned him a reputation as a complex performer. So he decided to reinvent himself as a supporting player of rare caliber, capable of stealing scenes from the biggest stars of the moment.

The Rebirth of the Corporate Villain

In 1996 he accepted the role of Jim Phelps in the film adaptation of Mission: Impossible. It was a purely commercial move that allowed him to settle his debts and introduce himself to a new generation. And the gamble paid off. Shortly after, he appeared in Heat alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, directed by Michael Mann.

His talent for conveying a chilling menace kept him busy throughout the 1990s. In 1997 he appeared in Anaconda, where his over-the-top performance became a cult favorite among genre fans. He didn't care about prestige; what mattered was staying constantly on screen.

There was no turning back.

In 2001, he played Howard Cosell in the biopic Ali and earned another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. To achieve the physical resemblance, he sat through makeup sessions lasting several hours a day. It was one of his last major physical transformation efforts before retreating to quality television.

In 2013, he joined the cast of the series Ray Donovan to bring Mickey Donovan to life. The character was a toxic yet charming father who earned him a Golden Globe in 2014. He worked on that show for seven seasons and closed out the story with a final film released in 2022.

Francis Ford Coppola recruited him in 2024 to take part in Megalopolis. Voight accepted the role of a banking tycoon in a $120 million production financed entirely by the director. Filming his scenes in Atlanta ended with a costume budget that exceeded $50,000 just for his custom suits.
