Synopsis of The Offer

Albert S. Ruddy is a film producer who sets out to bring The Godfather to the screen, with Francis Ford Coppola as director. The story is set during the film's production, in 1972, in a Hollywood environment marked by clashes with Paramount executives and tensions with organized crime. Ruddy, played by Miles Teller, must push the project forward despite the obstacles of a troubled shoot. Alongside him are Robert Evans, the studio's head of production, and Mario Puzo, author of the novel. The series, created by Michael Tolkin for Paramount+, sets up a clash between three worlds: the studio, the film crew, and the Italian American mafia, which has its own interests in what happens on set.

Trivia about The Offer

Michael Tolkin knew only one anecdote about The Godfather, a fight between Mario Puzo and Frank Sinatra, and used it as the starting point for writing the script.

A line from Albert S. Ruddy ultimately convinced the screenwriter to write the series, according to the account of the project's origins.

Dan Fogler cited the documentary Hearts of Darkness, about the making of Apocalypse Now, as a masterclass in learning how to play Coppola.

Although some scenes are set in New York, filming took place only in California, and the city was recreated on the Paramount, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. studio lots.

Plans to shoot at the Chateau Marmont hotel in Los Angeles were canceled after a labor dispute at the establishment became public.

Juno Temple received the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film.

Rotten Tomatoes reports 57% positive reviews from 54 critics, and Metacritic gives it a score of 48 out of 100.

Miles Teller replaced Armie Hammer as Albert S. Ruddy during the development of the series, ahead of its premiere on Paramount+.
