Geoffrey Arend will always be the guy who licked the window of a police car while shouting that the blueberries tasted like blueberries. That scene from Super Troopers in 2001 defined his entry into the industry in a way few actors manage to absorb without getting trapped in the parody. But this New Yorker of Pakistani and German heritage had plans that went far beyond raunchy comedy.
His training at the Tisch School of the Arts gave him the technical tools to be more than the go-to comic sidekick. Arend is a method actor disguised as an eternal supporting player who knows how to wait for his moment behind the camera. His lanky build and intense gaze have let him move between genres without audiences noticing the effort.
In 2009, he played McKenzie in (500) Days of Summer, bringing the cynical counterpoint the movie needed to avoid drowning in sugar. The chemistry with Joseph Gordon-Levitt was real because both shared the energy of actors who prefer the stage to the red carpet. The film's success opened the doors of major television studios for him.
And then the phone started ringing nonstop.
Television gave him the paycheck and public profile that independent film had denied him. For three seasons on Body of Proof, he played Ethan Gross between 2011 and 2013. Before shooting, he studied forensic medicine manuals so his movements on set wouldn't look like an amateur's.
But it was in 2014 that the role came along that would define his daily routine for more than five years. In Madam Secretary, he played Matt Mahoney across 120 episodes until the series ended in 2019. Arend earned a steady paycheck while other peers of his generation fought for auditions in an industry that was starting to cannibalize itself.
That relentless work pace let him step away from the media spotlight surrounding his personal life. In 2009, he married actress Christina Hendricks, and for a decade they were photographers' favorite couple at every awards gala. But the relationship officially ended in 2019, and the actor decided to refocus his career on much darker projects.
The tone changed completely.
After the political drama ended, he sought projects that broke away from his image as the friendly, somewhat clumsy guy. In 2022, he joined the cast of Physical to play Jerry in the second and third seasons. Here he unleashes a much darker, more manipulative side that fits the suffocating aesthetic of the 1980s the series is built on.
For an actor who has spent years on broadcast television, returning to streaming means reclaiming a creative freedom that commercial breaks tend to kill. In 2022, he also took part in The Offering under the direction of Oliver Park. It's a horror film in which he plays Artie, facing a demonic entity inside a Jewish funeral home in New York.
Arend seems to have found his footing in mature performance, far from high school antics. His role in the fiction podcast The Prophecy in 2022 alongside Kerry Washington confirmed that his voice is now one of his most in-demand assets in the audio entertainment industry.
The Offering was shot almost entirely at the Nu Boyana studios in Bulgaria on an estimated budget of $5 million.
