A torn ankle ended her dreams of becoming a professional ballet dancer at age 16. Marin Hinkle didn't pursue acting out of an early calling (dance was her whole life), but the need to fill the void left by the stage led her to New York University.
There she trained at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts in an effort to rebuild her identity. After graduating, she began landing supporting roles in New York theater and procedural series that barely covered her rent bills.
She never laced up her pointe shoes again.
In 1994, she made her film debut in Angie and soon after landed a recurring role on the drama Once and Again. But Hollywood still wasn't quite sure what to do with her image as a smart, somewhat stiff woman with a melancholy gaze.
In 2003, she landed the role of Judith Harper-Melnick on the sitcom Two and a Half Men. What seemed like a guest role grew into a part across twelve seasons and 84 episodes, playing Alan Harper's neurotic ex-wife.
Television made her a millionaire.
Despite the show's popularity, Hinkle's job was to be the serious counterpoint to Charlie Sheen's jokes. For years, she worked in the shadows of the spotlight while building her wealth and taking on minor independent film projects such as Quarantine in 2008.
And her bet on stability paid off, giving her the financial freedom to choose her next steps with complete independence. In 2013, she appeared in the series Deception, but the project failed after just one season on air.
The industry often overlooks actresses once they pass fifty, but Amy Sherman-Palladino brought her back for a different project. In 2017, she played Rose Weissman in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and made audiences forget her past in CBS sitcoms.
Rose's character allowed her to travel to Paris, wear haute couture and explore the vulnerability of a woman rediscovering her independence. In 2019, she earned her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series after a memorable performance in the second season.
But the end of the series in 2023 closed a six-year chapter of intense shoots and constant coast-to-coast travel. Hinkle used the break to take on brief roles in commercial productions such as Jumanji: The Next Level, where she played Spencer's mom.
In 2024, her divorce settlement with Randall Sommer set up alimony payments and the division of their properties in Los Angeles after 25 years of marriage due to irreconcilable differences.
