The Face Who Was Everywhere

Eric Balfour isn't a global box office star, but his face has been part of American television furniture for decades. He started in 1991 on the children's show Kids Incorporated, where he shared the stage with a very young Jennifer Love Hewitt. He was a teenager from Los Angeles with long hair and that look that seemed to have seen it all.

In the nineties, he landed small roles in cult series that are now television history. He appeared in the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997, playing Jesse, a character the writers killed off quickly to make it clear that nobody was safe. But his real breakthrough came with the turn of the millennium.

In 2001, he played Gabe Dimas in Six Feet Under, which put him on the radar of top casting directors. His character was Claire Fisher's troubled boyfriend. The raw intensity he brought to the role helped him move away from the handsome, shallow-guy image that Hollywood tends to impose on actors with his look.

He wasn't chasing fame on magazine covers.

Shortly after, he joined the cast of 24 for its first season to bring Milo Pressman to life. It was a technical, dry role that he would revisit years later in 2007. Balfour learned early on that in the entertainment industry it's better to be a reliable actor than a flash in the pan. And that reliability opened the doors of genre film for him.

The Terror and Stability of Maine

In 2003, he starred in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre produced by Michael Bay. The film was a massive box office hit, grossing more than $100 million worldwide. Despite negative reviews, Balfour managed to make his character more than just cannon fodder for Leatherface's chainsaw.

And then the fantasy genre came calling.

For many viewers, Balfour will always be Duke Crocker. In 2010, he began filming Haven, a series loosely based on a novel by Stephen King that aired until 2015. For five seasons, he played a smuggler with a dark family past in a town full of curses. It was his most stable job, and it allowed him to buy a house and start a family far from the noise of red carpets.

Fantasy genre work kept him busy for five years.

Not everything in his career was a commercial success. In 2010, he starred in Skyline, an alien invasion film that critics mercilessly panned for its flat dialogue and uneven visual effects. Balfour never hid behind his failures. He kept working on independent productions and exploring his side as a musician with the band Born as Ghosts.

Directing and later-career projects

Over the years, he decided he wanted to be behind the camera. In 2017, he directed the feature film 100 Years and began getting involved in producing content that moved away from the commercial circuit of the major studios. For him, acting is a craft, while telling stories is a vital need that requires more control over the final product.

In 2022, he made a strong return to television with The Game, playing Todd Anderson. It is a sports drama that required him to take on far more restrained roles than his earlier sci-fi work. During 2023 and 2024, he has stayed active in independent film with projects such as Wilder Than Her, where the budget is low but the creative control is total.

In 2025, The Electric State is set for release, directed by the Russo brothers. It's a 200 million dollar blockbuster for a streaming platform, with a cast that includes Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. Filming took place mainly on location in Georgia from late 2022 into early 2023. His contract includes a strict confidentiality clause about the design of the film's robotic elements.
