Miles Teller has scars on his face that Hollywood makeup never quite covers. They're not an aesthetic choice or a character makeover for a tough role. They're the aftermath of a car accident in 2007 that nearly derailed his career before it started. That Ford Bronco rolled eight times, and the actor was thrown through the window.
His professional debut came in 2010 with Rabbit Hole. Nicole Kidman chose him personally because he saw something broken but real in him. He wasn't the typical catalog heartthrob. He had an odd gaze and a way of moving that was both unsettling and magnetic.
In 2013 he starred in The Spectacular Now. That was where critics realized his naturalness wasn't a fluke. He won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance for the role.
The industry started calling him again.
Damien Chazelle gave him an extreme physical challenge in 2014 with Whiplash. Teller had been playing drums since he was fifteen, but he had to rehearse until his hands blistered and bled. The director didn't cut the takes when the actor was exhausted or lost the rhythm.
The film grossed 49 million dollars on a minimal budget of just over three million. It was the moment his name landed on the radar of major studios. But success also brought a difficult-actor label that followed him for years in the American press.
And the gamble paid off.
The failure of Fantastic Four in 2015 could have buried his career for good. The reviews were brutal, and the shoot was described as total chaos between the director and the cast. Teller then retreated to smaller, quieter projects to rebuild his image.
In 2017 he shot Only the Brave and Thank You for Your Service. He was looking for characters in uniform with a strong code of honor. So he moved away from the teen comedies of his early career in search of a maturity the public hadn't fully granted him yet.
Joseph Kosinski cast him as Rooster in Top Gun: Maverick. The film was shot between 2018 and 2019, though its release was delayed by the global health crisis. He had to learn to fly real aircraft and endure G-forces that made almost the entire cast vomit.
The film grossed over 1,400 million dollars worldwide.
But his interest didn't stop at pure action blockbusters. In 2022 he starred in the miniseries The Offer, playing producer Albert S. Ruddy. It was an exercise in restraint, exploring the real behind-the-scenes story of The Godfather.
In 2025 he takes on the role of lawyer John Branca in the biopic Michael. He is also set to release The Gorge in the same period. It's a Skydance production where he shares the screen with Anya Taylor-Joy, directed by Scott Derrickson.
Miles Teller earns about 10 million dollars per film under standard contracts signed starting in 2024.
