The Black Sheep of Nashville

Ashley Judd refused to be an echo of her own family. While her mother Naomi and her sister Wynonna filled stadiums singing country, she chose to enroll at the University of Kentucky to study French. She sought neither the approval of the music industry nor the glitter of inherited sequins.

For years she avoided the stage and focused on anthropology and gender studies. But the magnetism of acting eventually beat out the textbooks. In 1991, she accepted a small role on Star Trek: The Next Generation and realized that her path did not lie with Tennessee ballads.

Acting was not the plan A.

In 1993, she starred in Ruby in Paradise. The independent film won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and earned her first serious recognition from specialized critics. There were no flashy red carpets, just a restrained, understated performance that caught the attention of the major studios in Los Angeles.

The Business of Elegant Fear

In the late nineties, she specialized in a very specific genre. The mid-budget psychological thriller found in her the ideal lead. She had the mix of vulnerability and coolness needed to play women who did not wait to be rescued by the hero of the moment.

In 1997, she starred in Kiss the Girls alongside Morgan Freeman. The film did so well that the studio Paramount repeated the formula years later. But it was in 1999 that her name was etched into Hollywood's ledgers with Double Jeopardy.

That film grossed $177 million worldwide. Judd played a woman wrongly imprisoned for the murder of her husband who, after getting out of prison, discovers he is still alive. Audiences connected with that silent rage and made her one of the most bankable actresses of the moment.

And the gamble paid off.

But the phone stopped ringing as often after the turn of the millennium. For a long time, rumors claimed that her demanding behavior on set or her difficult personality had kept her away from major productions. The reality was far murkier, and it had names and surnames in the offices of Miramax.

The Price of Breaking the Silence

In 2017, The New York Times published an investigation that shook the foundations of the film industry. Ashley Judd was one of the first actresses to speak out and denounce Harvey Weinstein's harassment. She recounted that in 1997, the producer invited her to a hotel in Beverly Hills for what was supposed to be a business meeting.

That refusal of the mogul's demands had immediate consequences for her career. In 2018, director Peter Jackson confirmed that Miramax had banned him from hiring her for The Lord of the Rings on the false charge that she was difficult to work with. She had been slapped with a black mark that lasted two decades.

But she didn't just wait for an apology that took years to arrive. She threw herself into humanitarian activism, and in 2010 she earned a master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University. For Judd, intellect was always a far more useful tool for defense than the fleeting fame of magazines.

Then came the physical blow.

In 2021, she suffered a catastrophic accident in the jungle of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She broke her leg in four places and had to be transported for 55 hours on an improvised stretcher and by motorbike until she received medical care. She spent months in rehabilitation to walk again without external supports.

In 2022, she returned to the screen playing herself in She Said. The film tells the story of the journalistic investigation that exposed abuse in Hollywood, and her participation was a moment of poetic justice. It was her way of closing a circle that began with a failed business meeting in a hotel room.

In 2022, filming of She Said employed more than a hundred extras to recreate the offices of The New York Times on Eighth Avenue.
