Benedict John Greenwood decided that his real surname did not fit on London theater marquees. So he chose his mother's name to audition, and the stage name stuck forever.
In 1990, he worked as an administrative clerk for the transport authority of the British capital while waiting for a call that would change his luck.
That didn't last long.
In 1992, he landed a role in the series Bye Bye Baby, and the paycheck allowed him to stop organizing bus schedules and focus on scripts. His training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama had been waiting for its moment after years of waiting.
Hollywood came calling in 1996 with The Truth About Cats & Dogs. He earned half a million dollars for playing a photographer caught in a love triangle with Uma Thurman.
The press named him the natural successor to Britain's biggest stars of the moment. But Chaplin was uncomfortable with the labels he was given in Los Angeles.
And he chose to break from the usual path toward commercial romantic comedies.
In 1998 he went to Australia to shoot The Thin Red Line under Terrence Malick's direction. The shoot was a six-month mess in which many well-known actors ended up cut from the final edit at the director's whim.
Chaplin survived the cut, and his face became recognizable worldwide amid the mud of war. His performance as Private Bell earned him the critical respect that Hollywood had denied him.
In 2001 he starred in Birthday Girl alongside Nicole Kidman. He had to learn basic Russian for the role and deal with a production that never quite won over the general audience.
From that point on, his priorities shifted toward projects with more dramatic weight and less media glitter. So he returned to London to find refuge in theater and in high-quality television productions.
In 2011 he appeared in the series Mad Dogs. It was a dark comedy shot in Mallorca that did very well on British television.
But his real interest remained in characters with shadows and few words.
In 2017, he filmed Apple Tree Yard for the BBC. The series confirmed that Chaplin worked best in the close range of the small screen rather than in big-budget special effects spectacles.
In 2021 he played Inspector Frank Mundi in The Nevers. The production suffered constant delays and changes in creative direction that forced the actor to sustain his character's intensity through almost three years of intermittent work.
In 2024, he joined the cast of The Gentlemen under the direction of Guy Ritchie. He plays Henry Collins in a gangster plot that brings back his most ironic and dry side.
He lives in London and keeps his private life under absolute wraps, something no magazine has managed to crack. His profile at the agency United Agents includes no links to official social media accounts.
