Emilia Fox

The Fox family legacy

Emilia Fox was born into a home where scripts piled up on the side tables. Her father is Edward Fox and her mother is Joanna David, so British theater ran in her blood long before she knew what a casting call was.

In 1995, she made her television debut in the BBC adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. She played Georgiana Darcy, alongside her real-life mother in the drama. It was a safe move that opened the doors of the industry for her without any grand fuss.

Because Fox never chased Hollywood hype.

She preferred to build her name in British productions with real dramatic weight. In 1997, she starred in Rebecca, and shortly after she worked under Roman Polanski in The Pianist, shot in 2002. That film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and gave her an international profile that she handled with considerable composure.

A life among fictional corpses

The year 2004 changed the pace of her life forever. She joined the cast of Silent Witness to replace the original lead, and what looked like a temporary contract became her professional home for decades.

Playing Dr. Nikki Alexander required her to learn real autopsy protocols. She spent months observing real pathologists so that her movements with the scalpel would not look like those of a beginner on camera.

And the gamble paid off.

The series reached its twenty-seventh season in 2024 with her leading the writing. Fox is the actress who has stayed longest on a British crime drama, surpassing four hundred recorded episodes.

New Ground and the International Market

Outside the lab, she has sought projects that let her breathe different air. In 2022, she premiered Signora Volpe, a series shot entirely in Italy in which she plays a retired spy. Filming for the second season in 2024 took her back to the landscapes of Umbria and Lazio to shoot three long-form episodes.

But television is not her only home. Fox has maintained a steady presence in London theater since her early days, alternating stage work with narrating audiobooks and true crime documentaries.

Before accepting a role, read the contract with a magnifying glass.

Her personal life has made headlines in the British press due to her marriage to Jared Harris, which ended in divorce in 2010. She has a daughter named Rose, born that same year, from her later relationship with Jeremy Gilley.

In 2024, the producers of Silent Witness renewed the filming contracts for the next twenty-four months of production at the West London studios.
