Ben Willis, a Fine Arts student, suffers from insomnia after his girlfriend, Suzy, leaves him. To make the sleepless nights more bearable, he starts working the night shift at the neighborhood supermarket. There he meets a wonderfully eccentric bunch of people who have each developed their own way of coping with the boredom of an eight-hour shift. Ben imagines himself stopping time; this way, he is able to appreciate the beauty of a frozen world with people inside it, especially Sharon, the quiet cashier who may hold the secret to solving Ben's insomnia.
