Shaun Evans was born in Liverpool in 1980 into a working-class family with no connection to the cameras. His father drove a taxi and his mother worked in a hospital, an environment that pushed him to make his own way in acting purely on instinct.
He won a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, but he left before finishing because he was offered a role in the series Teachers in 2002.
It was a risky decision.
During those first years in London, he balanced television work with small film appearances. In 2004, he appeared in Being Julia alongside Annette Bening, and shortly after he filmed The Virgin Queen for the BBC. These projects helped him understand how the British industry works from the inside.
In 2012, he took on the challenge of playing a young Endeavour Morse in the prequel to the iconic 1980s series. Many thought the weight of John Thaw's legacy would sink his career before it started. But Evans chose absolute restraint that kept the series on air for nine seasons until its finale in 2023.
While filming the episodes in Oxford, he became interested in what happened behind the cameras. So in 2017, he directed his first episode of Casualty for the BBC, launching a directing career that he would later apply to several episodes of Endeavour.
And the gamble paid off.
His time behind the camera was no whim of an actor with spare time. Evans wanted a technical control over the storytelling that acting did not allow him. By 2018, he was already balancing long shoot days in front of the mirror with supervising shots in the editing room.
The actor chose to move away from clean-cut characters after wrapping up his time as a detective. In 2021, he appeared in the thriller Vigil, playing Elliot Glover in a claustrophobic setting inside a nuclear submarine. British audiences responded with more than thirteen million viewers at its premiere.
In 2024, he took on the role of John Sweeney in the miniseries Until I Kill You, a project based on real events about a serial killer. For this role, he had to transform his physical image and move away from the intellectual vulnerability of his early career.
And the audience accepted it without blinking.
That same year, he returned to the West End stage in Harold Pinter's Betrayal at the Donmar Warehouse. The production contract specified that performances would run from May to June 2024, with seating limited to 250 people per show.
