Naomie Harris spent her teenage years dealing with severe scoliosis that forced her to wear a plastic brace for years. That physical experience shaped how she understood movement before stepping onto a professional stage.
She wasn't the typical child prodigy of British television.
She studied Political and Social Sciences at the University of Cambridge. But she didn't feel comfortable there, because the atmosphere was too elitist for a working-class girl from north London. That sense of isolation pushed her to turn to acting after graduating in 1998.
In 2002, she landed the role of Selena in 28 Days Later. Danny Boyle was looking for someone with real toughness, and she delivered a physical performance that avoided the usual victim tropes in horror films.
And the world started to take notice of her.
She entered the world of big-budget blockbusters playing Tia Dalma in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest in 2006. The role called for an exaggerated Jamaican accent and a mystical presence that Harris built from the stories she heard within her family.
But her real leap to the big time came in 2012.
In 2012, she became the first Black woman to play Eve Moneypenny in Skyfall. The script reimagined the character so she was no longer a secretary and became a field agent with questionable aim.
She reprised the role in Spectre in 2015 and in No Time to Die in 2021. The Bond franchise gave her financial stability that allowed her to choose much riskier projects on the independent circuit.
In 2016, she shot all her scenes for Moonlight in just three days. She was in the middle of a promotional tour for another film and flew to Miami to play Paula, a crack-addicted mother, with barely any time to rehearse or absorb the character.
Earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her frenzied, raw performance.
It was an all-or-nothing bet.
In 2022, she starred in the series The Man Who Fell to Earth, playing Justin Falls. Filming took place mainly on location in Spain and London to recreate a close-to-home science fiction setting.
In 2024, she led the cast of the psychological thriller The Wasp alongside Natalie Dormer. The film was shot on a tight budget and focused on a acting duel within confined city spaces in Bath.
Production on The Wasp wrapped post-production in the last quarter of 2023, with a final cut running 96 minutes.
