Keira Knightley was born with a spelling error in her name because her father made a mistake when registering her with the census. Dyslexia marked her early school years, but it didn't stop her from having her own talent agent by the age of six. She was a determined girl who used acting as a way to overcome her reading difficulties.
In 1999 she played Natalie Portman's decoy in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The physical resemblance between the two was so striking that even their own mothers had trouble telling them apart on set once they were made up. It was her first brush with big-budget blockbusters.
But her commercial breakout came in 2002 with Bend It Like Beckham. It was a modest production that ended up grossing $76 million worldwide. Knightley played a teenage soccer player in an England that was not yet used to seeing women lead the sports box office.
A year later came the Disney chaos. No one on the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl team fully believed in the project. She herself thought the movie would be a total disaster and that her career would end before she turned twenty.
He was completely wrong.
Knightley specialized in period drama with almost natural ease. In 2005, she earned her first Oscar nomination for playing Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice. Joe Wright the director initially didn't want to cast her because he considered her too pretty for the role.
The movie multiplied its initial $28 million budget fivefold.
In 2007 she starred in Atonement, and in 2012 she stepped into the shoes of Anna Karenina. These productions typecast her as a very specific British type. But Knightley chose to move away from the big action franchises and look for projects with more dramatic weight or smaller budgets.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2013, she filmed Begin Again on the streets of New York almost incognito. In 2014, she earned her second Oscar nomination thanks to The Imitation Game. In that film, she played Joan Clarke, the cryptanalyst who worked alongside Alan Turing to crack Nazi codes during World War II.
Starting in 2020, her work pace became more selective to prioritize family life. In 2023 she starred in Boston Strangler, playing journalist Loretta McLaughlin. It was a raw, straightforward shoot that avoided the usual glamour of her previous work to focus on the journalistic rigor of the 1960s.
In 2024 she filmed the espionage series Black Doves in London. It's a Christmas-set thriller in which she plays a woman with a double life who must protect her family from a criminal conspiracy.
In 2025, the release of The Woman in Cabin 10 is planned. It's a Netflix adaptation of Ruth Ware's novel in which she plays a travel journalist who witnesses a murder on a luxury cruise.
In 2022, her estimated net worth exceeded $ 80 million.
