In 2005, Natalie Dormer landed her first professional role in Casanova opposite Heath Ledger. Director Lasse Hallström was so impressed by her improvisational skills that he decided to expand her character during filming. It seemed like the start of a meteoric career, but the reality of the British film industry turned out to be much harsher.
But the phone stopped ringing.
For ten months, the actress had to go back to work at a data entry office to pay her rent in London. That long dry spell shaped the way she understood the craft. She learned that talent doesn't guarantee a paycheck and that precarious work is the norm even after filming in Venice alongside major stars.
In 2007 the series The Tudors pulled her out of administrative anonymity and put her in the role of Anne Boleyn. Dormer did not play the queen as a simple historical victim. She brought her an intellectual toughness and a defiant gaze that led the writers to keep her on screen longer than originally planned.
That job on American cable television gave her access to the world of big Hollywood productions. In 2011 she had a brief appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger and took part in the series Silk. But the project that would change her global visibility was still to come.
Margaery Tyrell was no naïve girl.
When Dormer joined Game of Thrones in 2012, she specifically asked the creators for her character to have a clear political agenda. She didn't want to be just another piece on the board but someone who knew how to move them. Her portrayal of the Queen of King's Landing drew on a natural facial asymmetry that she used to project ambition and mystery in equal measure.
And audiences responded with immediate fascination for that crooked smile. While filming the HBO series, she balanced her time with mainstream action movies. In 2014, she joined the The Hunger Games: Mockingjay franchise, where she shaved half her head to play Cressida. It was an aesthetic choice she proposed herself, to move away from the courtly image the public had of her.
Her time in London's theater scene has also been consistent, helping her keep her acting skills sharp. In 2017, she starred in Venus in Fur in the West End, earning reviews that praised her complete command of the stage. For her, the stage is where an actor reclaims the freedom that film editing sometimes takes away.
In 2018, she decided she no longer wanted to wait for the perfect scripts to come to her. She co-wrote the thriller In Darkness with Anthony Byrne after a development process that lasted nearly eight years. In the film, she played a blind pianist who witnesses a murder, and she was directly involved in the production and casting decisions.
Her professional maturity has allowed her to choose projects with more complex narrative structures. In 2020 she led the cast of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, taking on the challenge of playing four different characters with radically opposite aesthetics and accents. The series was canceled after one season, but its technical execution was unquestionable.
In 2021, her first daughter was born, and that kept her away from the spotlight for a respectable amount of time. She prioritized her private life over constant exposure on the red carpet. So her return to work happened on her own terms, with a focus on stories that explore female psychology from less-traveled angles.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she premiered White Lies, an investigative series shot in South Africa in which she plays a court reporter caught up in a corruption plot. That same year, she presented The Wasp at the Tribeca Film Festival. It is a low-budget psychological thriller in which she shares the screen with Naomie Harris, shot entirely in Bath during the summer of 2022.
The Wasp had a tight production budget and was shot in just twenty intensive filming days.
