Logan Marshall-Green carries the stigma of being the long-lost twin of Tom Hardy. It's a recurring joke on movie forums that he ignores while building a career based on restraint and physical risk. Because his career doesn't depend on a pretty face or a passing resemblance to an A-list star.
He was born in Charleston and grew up in an environment where acting was no hall of mirrors. He has a real twin brother, Taylor, who works behind the camera. That duality seems to have shaped his view of acting as a craft of shadows and nuance.
He trained at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York. There he learned that the body is a precision tool and that theater is the only place where an actor can fail without being buried for it. Before making the leap to the big screen, he spent years on Off-Broadway stages.
And the discipline he honed on stage shows in his first steps on television.
He appeared in episodes of Law & Order and had a recurring role in The O.C. during 2005. But those roles as a teen heartthrob or the usual suspect didn't fit his intensity. He wanted something grittier and less willing to please the audience.
In 2012, Ridley Scott cast him in Prometheus. He played Charlie Holloway, an archaeologist with an outsized ego who ends up devoured by his own scientific ambition. It was his first major exposure to a global audience and the moment the industry began to take him seriously beyond independent circles.
But the real turning point didn't happen on a alien superproduction. It happened at an awkward dinner in the Hollywood Hills.
In 2015, he starred in The Invitation under the direction of Karyn Kusama. His performance as a man broken by grief who suspects his ex-wife's intentions is an exercise in contained paranoia. The film became a cult favorite almost immediately.
The tension was palpable in every shot.
Three years later came his biggest physical challenge in Upgrade. In 2018, he took on Leigh Whannell to play a paraplegic man who regains mobility through an experimental chip. Marshall-Green had to separate his facial movements from those of his limbs to convey that an artificial intelligence was controlling his muscles.
It was a choreography of raw violence that earned him the respect of genre film fans. He turned a B-movie premise into a deep, painful tech drama.
Despite his confidence in front of the camera, he always showed an interest in having full control over the story. In 2019, he wrote and directed Adopt a Highway. The film stars Ethan Hawke as a man who finds a baby in a dumpster after getting out of prison.
And the gamble paid off.
Critics praised his sensitivity in portraying loneliness without resorting to cheap sentimentality. He wasn't chasing easy applause but exploring redemption from a rough-edged angle. That same edginess carried over into his later work as an actor.
In 2022, he appeared in the film Lou for Netflix. In 2024, he joined the cast of the thriller Carry-On, an action production set in an airport during the holiday season. He keeps alternating mainstream projects with works that let him stay low-profile in the tabloids.
His contract for the series Quarry in 2016 included intensive training with Vietnam-era weapons. The show was canceled by Cinemax after just eight episodes due to the high logistical costs of its period setting.
