New York, 1957. Authorities arrest Rudolf Abel, a man accused of spying for the Soviet Union during the Cold War. For his defense, they turn to James B. Donovan, a private-practice attorney who specializes in insurance law, although during World War II he served as general counsel of the Office of Strategic Services. Donovan accepts the assignment and becomes Abel's legal counsel. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film stars Tom Hanks, and the story follows how this lawyer handles a case that places him at the center of tension between two superpowers.
