Billy Magnussen was born in Queens in 1985 but grew up in the state of Georgia. His rich, somewhat insufferable look has fed him for two decades. He is not the typical Hollywood heartthrob who tries to be likable at all costs.
In fact, his specialty is making audiences want to punch him.
In 2007, he made his Broadway debut in the play The Ritz. That was the start of a physical relationship with acting, where the body matters as much as the text. His training at the North Carolina School of the Arts gave him the tools to be more than just a gym-built blond. But it was his ability to laugh at his own square jaw that pulled him out of obscurity.
In 2014, he played Rapunzel's prince in Into the Woods. He sang and danced, but what really caught attention was his ability to parody himself. That self-parodying tone opened doors to much darker and more complex projects.
He worked with Steven Spielberg on Bridge of Spies in 2015. It was a small role. But it taught him how the machinery of big blockbusters works. Because Magnussen is an actor who observes far more than he talks during shoots.
In 2018, Game Night came out. He played Ryan, a not-so-bright guy trying to impress his friends. Critics started to take him seriously as a physical comedy actor. His sense of timing and vacant stares in that movie elevated a script that was already solid on its own.
The industry often typecast him as the privileged antagonist. In 2021 he joined the Bond franchise with No Time to Die, playing Logan Ash. His character was a mix of charisma and psychopathy that worked perfectly against James Bond, played by Daniel Craig. His death on screen was one of the most talked-about moments of that installment.
And then he decided to start producing.
He founded his own production company, Happy Bad Bungalow, because he wanted control over the stories he tells. In 2024, he premiered the new version of Road House alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. His performance as Ben Brandt in that film confirmed he's comfortable with excess and with characters who border on caricature without ever falling into it.
That same 2024, he stepped into the role of Adam in the series The Franchise. Sam Mendes's satire of superhero movies let him poke fun at the industry from the inside. Shooting in London under Mendes's direction marked a change of pace from his usual schedule and let him explore the exhaustion of the action genre.
Despite his intense work pace, he keeps a rock band called The Dash. He plays bass and often says music is his escape when filmmaking gets too bureaucratic. So he balances small tours with red carpets in Los Angeles without any apparent identity crisis.
In 2025, the live-action movie Lilo & Stitch, in which he plays Pleakley, is scheduled for release. The estimated production budget exceeds 60 million dollars.
